The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science aims to contribute to the studentís liberal education by showing the role mathematics has played and is playing in the development of civilization and by giving him or her the opportunity to appreciate mathematics for its own esthetic qualities.
Our department consists of four full-time faculty members and offers a B.A. in mathematics, a B.S. in mathematics with concentrations in theoretical and computational mathematics, as well as minors in both mathematics and computer science. Our B.A. in mathematics can be combined with further study as part of the 3-2 Engineering Program.
Our curriculum is planned so that majors after graduation can choose from a number of avenues, including teaching, industry, actuarial work, and graduate study. Recent majors have taken jobs as actuaries and math teachers in Shreveport, computer programmers for Alltel, computer system analysts for companies in the Northeast, and high school teachers in Dallas. Other students have gone on to graduate school at Tulane, Vanderbilt, SMU, LSU Baton Rouge, the University of Arkansas, the University of Mississippi, the University of Nebraska, and the University of Texas at Austin.
