Senior Director of Alumni Relations

NEW! Meet David Henington

No one would have guessed that before David Henington '82 was senior director of alumni relations at Centenary College, he was helping fixture and set up the first Toys R Us store in Louisiana. With his pure love for people, it is not hard to visualize David stocking toys for Christmas. After two Christmas seasons, he left the world of corporate retail for banking and worked at Louisiana Bank and Trust for five years. In 1989, while serving as president of the Centenary Alumni Board, he joined the development staff fulltime. He started working with prospect research and the Annual Fund, but found his calling working with alumni.

Alumni Relations would not be the same without David. He has a knack for remembering people and knowing connections between alumni. He genuinely cares for all Centenary alumni. The biggest part of David's job is keeping the connection alive between Centenary alumni and their alma mater. He also raises money for the College. David said, "In this job, I work all of the time. I run into alumni and donors everywhere I go. A few years ago I was in Budapest and wearing a Centenary t-shirt and ran into an alum at a local market. Usually I run into people at less exotic places like Albertsons!"

Aside from work, David enjoys travel, movies, entertaining, music, reading and keeping up with current world events. You never know where he will be traveling next. Highlights of some travels have been Centenary alumni trips to Yorkshire, Scotland, Wales, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Greece, Italy and Ireland. One of his favorite vacations was to Australia. After a relaxing week with friends in far North Queensland, hiking in rainforests, and taking a dive in the Great Barrier Reef, he spent a week in Sydney. They were, "Two very different experiences." On the way back he spent 5 days visiting friends in San Francisco. "It was a fascinating few weeks." On other trips he has traveled to Buenos Aires, Italy, London, Amsterdam, Paris and Berlin. The past two summers he spent a few weeks in San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City and plans to spend more time in Mexico in the coming years. He plans to go to Egypt, Turkey and Peru.

David has friends all over the world and enjoys staying in touch. Many of them are from his years as a student at Centenary. "Our fraternity gets together every year. But with email it is easy to stay in touch." David's job at Centenary has sparked some wonderful friendships with people of all ages, "That is the best part of my job," he says.

If you happen to see David on his way to Dallas, there is a chance that he is going to see a movie or two that you can not see in Shreveport. He likes to start his day early with a cup of coffee, catching up on email and scanning the net for headlines and news. During David's 16 years in Alumni Relations, he has transformed the office into a professional environment and continues to help Centenary grow.

Next month, Carla E. Alsandor MBA '04, director of alumni programs, will share what it takes to organize effective volunteer alumni groups that make alumni parties amazing, and how to keep the good Centenary times rolling.

Alex Cochran, age 13, contributed to this article. She is a student at Montessori School in Shreveport. She interned with Alumni Relations for one week in December. Thank you Alex for all of your hard work, we enjoyed having you here at Centenary.
