Announcing the Newest Alumni Chapter: Little Rock, Arkansas!

An enthusiastic group of Little Rock alums gathered for Happy Hour at Loca Luna recently and began making plans to start a formal alumni chapter, with help from the Alumni Relation’s staff. Alumni Chapters serve to support the College by helping to keep alumni connected with each other and their alma mater, to assist with student recruitment, internships, and alumni networking, and to organize social events throughout the year. For those Little Rock alums that weren’t at the Happy Hour, you may be wondering what it takes to get a chapter started. There are three initial steps:

  1. Find an alumna/alumnus to take on the leadership role of Chapter President for the first year
  2. Call a strategy meeting, attended by any interested alumni, to decide how to proceed and to form the rest of the Executive Committee
  3. Hold a big, fun Kick Off Event for all area alumni to get together and celebrate.

Guess what! Step one has already been accomplished. Little Rock’s first president is Matt Prysock ’96. Matt has graciously volunteered to serve in this capacity. If you are interested in participating in Step 2, please attend the strategy meeting at Matt’s house on November 10 th at 6 PM. For more information and directions, contact Matt at or 501-247-0885 (cell).

Baton Rouge Alumni Tailgate Party Rescheduled

The Baton Rouge Alumni Chapter invites everyone to come out for a good time on Saturday, October 29 th at Tiger Stadium. A Centenary Alumni Tailgate Party will be held from 4-7 PM before LSU takes on North Texas. Come enjoy some good food and great company. This event was postponed due to Hurricane Katrina and even though things are still far from normal for many South Louisiana alumni, Centenary is pleased to offer this opportunity for alumni to get together for social interaction and to support each other. The tailgate spot is in Section A, Space 97. It is located in the stadium lot on Nicholson Drive (across Nicholson Drive from Alex Box Stadium) with about thirty feet under the Oak trees between the parking lot and Nicholson Drive. Look for a tent and a large Centenary banner. Some snacks and soft drinks will be provided. Everyone is welcome to bring more food, beverages, and chairs. Everyone is welcome—pass the word and join in the fun (even if you don’t plan to attend the game)! Wear you Centenary garb to qualify for prize drawings.

Baseball Alumni Game and Toast Scheduled for ‘James Farrar Day’; 13th Annual Golf Invitational to be Held at Olde Oaks

The Centenary baseball team will host their annual alumni game as part of “Coach James Farrar Day” on Sunday, November 6, at 2 p.m. at Shehee Stadium. The game will be followed by a “Toast and Roast” for the Centenary Hall of Famer at the Shreveport Country Club at 5:30 p.m. All of Sunday’s proceeds will go to the Centenary College Baseball Scholarship in the name of Coach Farrar. Coach Farrar, a 2000 inductee to the Centenary Athletics Hall of Fame, was instrumental in bringing the Gents baseball program into national prominence. During his seven years at the helm, Farrar had 10 players drafted into the pros and was the driving force behind the overhaul and capital improvements on then-named Centenary Park (now Shehee Stadium). Now a scout for the Houston Astros, he has launched the Major League careers of talent such as former 20-game winner J.R. Richard and current ace Roy Oswalt. The alumni game is free of charge for all former Gent players, but a small donation is appreciated in the spirit of the celebration for Coach Farrar. The “Toast and Roast” at Shreveport Country Club includes a $25 donation, heavy hors d’oeuvres, and a cash bar. Monday, November 7, marks the return of the 13 th Annual Curtis H. Stout Invitational Golf Tournament, hosted by Centenary Baseball at Olde Oaks Golf Club in Haughton, La. The four-player scramble will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start, and is followed by a silent auction and presentation of awards. Fees for the tournament are $125 per player (individual players welcome) and $500 per team of four. Included are greens fees, cart, beverages, lunch, and prizes for first to third place, hole-in-one, longest drive, and closest to the pin. Sponsorships are also available, and the registration deadline is November 1 st. For more information about the alumni game, “Toast and Roast”, or Curtis H. Centenary Takes Mission Trip to Slidell during Fall Break

Alumni, students, and staff members spend three days and nights in Slidell helping Hurricane Katrina victims. View photos from a very productive and meaningful trip. Director of Church Relations Mimi McDowell who helped Chaplain Betsy Eaves ’78 organize the mission trip shared these observations, “The entire group of students, alumni and adults was tremendous. The students worked hard, never complaining or bickering. They were sensitive and caring to the families that we encountered, and they represented Centenary well. As Mr. Vince told us when we circled up for prayer before leaving his home, ‘When I think of Hurricane Katrina, I won’t think of what I lost. I will remember the folks at Centenary College and what they did for me.’”
