Centenary Cheers On Alumnus Hal Sutton
Centenary alumni will join millions of viewers and golf fanatics this week to watch the Ryder Cup matches and to cheer on Centenary alumnus Hal Sutton '81 who is this year's U. S. Team Captain. Thursday marks the official start of The 35th Ryder Cup Matches being held at the Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Township, Michigan. Best wishes and congratulations go out to Hal. Here is an exert from the press announcement from The Ryder Cup website:
alumni/Sutton was unveiled at a news conference at Oakland Hills Country Club and said: "I'm overwhelmed and honored. I'm in awe of it, to be honest, but it has to be the greatest honor that can be bestowed on any golfer and I am looking forward to the challenge. I am going to do my best to bring the cup back to the USA. We are loaded with talent in the United States and we just need to let that talent shine through." Since 1987, The Ryder Cup has been decided by a total of three points or less, with three of the last five Matches decided by 14 1/2 -13 1/2 margins. Europe has won The Ryder Cup in six of the last nine competitions.
"Hal Sutton's passion for the game, his drive to become a champion and his leadership in past Ryder Cup Matches make him the ideal leader to guide the American team in the 2004 Matches," said PGA of America President Jack Connelly. "Hal was a key member of past Ryder Cup Teams and his performances have earned him the respect of his teammates as well as many around the world." A native and resident of Shreveport, Louisiana, Sutton won the 1980 US Amateur Championship and turned professional the following year. One of the most successful players of the 1980s, Sutton won the 1983 PGA Player of the Year Award.
