About the BIG Event
The BIG Event is a student-led, large scale, day of service which unites Centenary with its surrounding neighbors to build relationships, express gratitude, and enhance the community that has supported the college for over one-hundred years.
Our Purpose & Origin
At the BIG Event, students, faculty, staff, and alumni all come together to act as neighbors helping neighbors. Together, we work to beautify the surrounding neighborhoods of Centenary College, to show our gratitude for their support of our community, and to allow us to give back and connect with the Shreveport community. Volunteers have the opportunity to choose from various helpful activities, including exterior home improvement, basic landscaping, and inside services.
Holly Williams, director of our first BIG Event in 2008, describes the event's origins at Centenary this way:
After attending an SGA convention my sophomore year at Texas A&M, I knew that the BIG Event was something that needed to be brought to Centenary's campus. After a two year planning process, leading the first BIG Event was a huge success and such a rewarding experience.
With an awesome leadership team and great support from the campus and alumni, Centenary was truly able to give back and build relationships with the community all while celebrating 100 years! I will never forget the smiles on the homeowners' faces as college students readily arrived to work for free, early, on a Saturday! It truly is a BIG Event, and it makes me very proud to know that students are continuing to give back each year.
