The Joys of Dorm Life
Dorm life is one of my favorite things about Centenary thus far. I must admit that, throughout high school, my biggest fear of moving away was the awkward first phone call between my random roommate and myself. Luckily, I never had to make that call. I came to Preview Weekend 2007 and met a girl who was pretty normal. After I made my final decision to come to Centenary, I contacted said girl via MySpace.com (okay I’m a little bit of a cyber stalker at times) and we decided we would room together.
So beginning my “residence hall” experience was not near as traumatic as it could have been, though some of my friends from home made faces when I mentioned living on campus. These days, I often think if they only knew the joys of living on campus…oh if they only knew.
While there are countless things I love about living on campus, I’ve narrowed my list down to five really great things (though most are particular to Hardin Hall because that is where I currently reside).
5. Convenience
The absolute best thing is the convenience (even though it is number 5). For example, if I did not live on campus I would never make it to my 8:20 class (and really even my 10:00 class). Living on campus and being able to wake up less than thirty minutes before class and still make it on time is, well – amazing.
It is also efficient. The time commuters (not that there’s anything wrong with commuting if that’s how you identify) spend on Youree Drive is the perfect amount of time to take a nap (or study if you are in to that kind of thing). When you have a big test or even troublesome homework it is nice to be able to stay on campus or in your dorm, study with classmates, drink insane amounts of red bull, and then go twenty feet to your residence hall. (You of course will not be able to sleep because of the red bull, but it’s still nice to be able to not sleep so close to the rest of campus).
4. Big Rooms…in Hardin Hall
I believe that says it all.
3. The Crutch
In Hardin, there is a crutch in the stairway. Don’t misunderstand me, I am not creating a metaphor of any sort, there is literally a crutch in the staircase. The reason I think this is great is because everyone here pretty much acts like it’s a normal thing. I mean, am I the first to ask why there is a crutch in the center staircase? And more importantly, I ask, why is there only one? Curious as it is, it serves as a great conversational piece with Non-Hardin residents.
2. “No Smoking Unless You are on Fire”
Signs like these in the Hardin Halls not only serve as warnings but also make me laugh every single morning. Who can look at a sign like that and not laugh? If you think you could, you are lying to yourself. It just brightens my day and it has also made me very aware of hot people. You have to watch them more closely because they are more likely to be on fire, which is allowed in Hardin.
1. Next Door Neighbor to Jones-Rice Field
Ladies, am I wrong? Intramural season as well as Ultimate Frisbee season as well as beach volleyball season as well as shirtless spectator season have all begun. And let me speak on behalf of most of Hardin Hall, I fully support others' rights to participate in all these activities.
In any case, Residence Life is absolutely fabulous in my opinion. I hope you enjoy some of the pictures (though some are pretty random) I included and stay tune for more updates on my Freshmen Year adjustment.
