The Big Event!

Hey everybody! I thought for sure someone else would beat me to writing about the Big Event, but apparently I was wrong. Which is good for me, because that means I get first dibs! So here goes:

For those of you didn’t hear about it, the Big Event is a large-scale community service event that was sponsored by Centenary. It involved over 300 people going out into the Highland community to work on household jobs-such as repainting, mowing lawns and raking-thereby being useful parts of society and providing an “I did good today” feeling for everyone involved. Honestly, for us Theta Chi, it was just a lot of fun…

Theta Chi signed up for the event almost as soon as sign up started. We got assigned one of the biggest jobs available, if not THE biggest. We were assigned to clean a yard that had not been cleaned in several years. When we got there, the sheer magnitude of things to do made us all a little hesitant as to whether or not we’d be able to complete the task in the allotted time, however that was not enough to dissuade these steady hearts. As soon as we jumped right into work.

Our team was composed of ten Theta Chi, nine actives and one alumnus. Our Alumnus Brother Eddie Seabough joined us that day, and had enough presence of mind to bring in some of his own tools, which really speeded up the job. With the aid of his weed-whacker, we cleaned out that hard in no time. We had about three or four people raking at all times, and as soon as they finished, they began to bag and dispose of the gigantic mounds of leaves created. Out back, we had four or five people working on de-weeding the back yard, cutting down vines, and when trimming trees became impossible, acting the part of lumberjacks, and taking down three trees. That lady’s yard never knew what hit it.

We can’t take all the praise for that day, however, for had it remained just the ten of us, we would have never been able to finish in time. As the day progressed and the stopping time came nearer we realized that we needed more help if we planned to finish the job, so reinforcements were called in. We had a LOT of people show up most of who are members of the basketball team and swim team, and help us do all the things that still needed to be done. Props to them for an outstanding job as well.

Anyway, the Big Event was a bunch of fun, and everyone involved enjoyed it thoroughly. I can’t speak for everyone else, but I can say that Theta Chi is ready and geared up for next year’s version of the Big Event.

Yours,
Marco
