Choral Groups and Freak Week

This past week, I went to both of the Centenary College Choir Concerts and the Camerata Concert.

The Camerata Concert was a fundraiser for their upcoming trip to Carnegie Hall, where they have been invited to sing in February. They sang some stuff from West Side Story and some folk songs, but they also sang some difficult classical pieces. The concert was really good, and I got to be stage manager (which consisted of moving a chair and a stand), and the page turner for their accompanist. Let me tell you, being a page turner is not as easy as it looks, especially when the music is fast and new to you. Every piano player has their way of reading music and some are particular about when their page turner turns their pages. It’s nerve-wrecking business. Overall it was a great concert and I really enjoyed it.

The Centenary College Choir performed their 65th annual Rhapsody in View concert, which was also a fundraiser for their England/Ireland summer tour. They go on major trips like this frequently. They sang a fun concert, from folk to gospel, jazz to broadway. A lot of the choir members sang solos or played instruments in some of the folk and jazz pieces. For the second part of the concert, alumni of the Centenary Choir joined the current members to sing more songs. There were about 300 people on stage and their sound filled the entire hall. Another concert I really enjoyed. I’m going to be the accompanist for the choir next fall, and I’m looking forward to playing with them.

Another exciting thing that happened this week was Freak Week, sponsored by CAB (beep beep). Of course, the t-shirts were free (much like at every other event on campus), and the events were entertaining. I went to watch the hypnotist/comedian on Monday of this week. I really wanted to be hypnotized, and was pretty surprised when I was chosen to be one of the people hypnotized. Unfortunately, it didn’t work for me, and I was sent back to my seat in the audience. Oh well… Some of the participants seemed to respond pretty well to his ‘commands.’ They danced around like strippers, and a couple of the guys even gave birth. It was pretty funny, although I’m not totally convinced the students were really under the influence of hypnosis.

I also went to a haunted house in the basement of James Dormitory. While we waited to go in, Saw II was playing on the big-screen in the lobby, sort of to set the mood I guess. It was a fun haunted house, and I took the chance to scare a couple of my friends even though I wasn’t one of the ones involved.

There were some other events planned for Freak Week, but because I’m a busy one, I didn’t get to go.

That’s it for now, and sorry for no pictures…
