An internship generally involves work at an industrial or commercial laboratory for at least 120 hours spread out over a semester or summer. These experiences are valuable for many of the same reasons as a research experience. Internships provide contacts and practical experience that are especially valuable for students seeking immediate employment in chemistry or biochemistry after graduation.
The Shreveport area offers several unique opportunities for internships. Most recently, our students have completed internships at Mid-South Analytical Laboratory (environmental testing), the Louisiana Army Munitions Plant Site Chemistry Laboratory (environmental monitoring), and the North Louisiana Criminalistics Laboratory (forensic chemistry). Universal Oil Products and the regionís emerging pharmaceutical industry offer additional internship possibilities. These arrangements are generally negotiated through a faculty member with the specific laboratory of interest. See a chemistry faculty member and/or your advisor for details.
