Paul: An Apostate Apostle

Who was the founder of Christianity? We assume it was Jesus himself. However, a more careful look at Christian doctrine points to a different answer. Jesus certainly provided an exceptional code of ethics; he taught us how we should live a life that reflected the Kingdom of God. But Jesus didn’t teach us what to believe. That instead should be credited to the apostle Paul. An historical examination of his letters to the churches shows his developing theology as well as his attempts to distinguish between Pharisaic and Christian Judaism. This study of Paul will begin by describing the “historical Paul.” Did he experience a dramatic conversion, as depicted in the book of Acts? Or did he experience a call from God, as he described in his letter to the Galatians? After getting a sense of Paul, the man, we will continue with an analysis of his 7 genuine letters. We will see how his letters were written to address specific issues in the congregations he established and how his positions changed over a 10-year period. Because of Paul’s stature in the growing Christian religion, others began to write in his name and still others wrote stories about him. We will conclude the study by reading the Deutero-Pauline letters and the apocryphal Pauline stories to see evidence of what were becoming the most important issues of the growing Christian movement.
