Christian Leadership Center FAQ
Is the Christian Leadership Center a major?
No. It is an academic program within Centenary College that accepts students of all majors and from all denominations. The Christian Leadership Center is an intense co-curricular activity designed to promote the exploration of what it means to be called to Christian leadership.
What in the world does "CLC" stand for?
"Christian Leadership Center."
How do I get into the Program?
First, you need to apply to Centenary College through the Admissions Office, and then you may apply to the Christian Leadership Center by requesting an application or applying online. Application includes completion of the CLC application, a personal essay, a pastor's recommendation letter, and an interview with the CLC staff.
Do I have to major in Religious Studies to be in the Christian Leadership Center?
No. Any full-time Centenary student can be in the Christian Leadership Center, no matter what major you have chosen. In fact, many of our students do not major in Religious Studies. Our students may major in any undergraduate degree program offered by the college.
But I don't want to be preacher or professional church worker. Should I still consider joining the Christian Leadership Center?
Yes. In the Christian Leadership Center, we believe God calls all people to be ministers of the message of God's love. We believe that ministry is lived out in many different ways. Some are called to be clergy. Others are called to be teachers. Still others become doctors, writers, or artists. Some are called to be full-time parents. If you are interested in exploring your faith, thinking critically about your beliefs, and learning how God has a purpose for your life, then the Christian Leadership Center may be the place for you.
Do you have to be a United Methodist to join?
Absolutely not! While Centenary College is affiliated with The United Methodist Church, Christian Leadership Center students come from many different Christian traditions. It is the diversity that makes us so unique. Learning to love, listen, and work with one another helps promote religious tolerance and a rich appreciation for differences. We have had students affiliated with Assembly of God, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic, Greek-Orthodox, Episcopalian, non-denominational, and several other traditions.
Once accepted, do I participate in the Christian Leadership Center every year?
It's up to you. Your commitment to CLC lasts for nine months. Every student interested in returning to the Christian Leadership Center program completes an application for re-committment to CLC for the following academic year. Current students in good standing receive first priority in acceptance to the program.
Do I receive academic credit?
Yes. Each participant in the Christian Leadership Center will enroll in REL 200. This one-hour credit course may be repeated a maximum of eight times. Credit is based on the satisfactory completion of the CLC’s specific semester requirements.
How am I recognized for program participation?
Upon meeting the requirements of a nine-month commitment to the Christian Leadership Center, students receive a Certificate of Completion. Students who successfully complete three or more years will obtain a Certificate of Endorsement, which is recognized by many regional faith communities as proof of one’s readiness for professional ministry, seminary training, or local church leadership.
