Getting Quoted in Encarta article

Centenary graduate Harmony Newman, now working on her Ph.D. at Vanderbilt, is quoted in the article "Sizing Up the Social Sciences" in MSN Encarta's Lifelong Learning section. A member of the Centenary Class of 2003 and a sociology student of Dr. Michelle Wolkomir, Ms. Newman received the prestigious Odum Award from the Southern Sociological Society for preparing the most outstanding paper on a sociological topic by an undergraduate in 2003.

In the portion of the Encarta article quoting Ms. Newman, Encarta's Ysolt Usigan writes, "Students are enticed by how broad the social science discipline is. Upon graduation, students are able to choose from among various professions with their flexible degrees. In addition, students are turned on to social science because it's personal and has close ties with their own lives.

" ' One of my attractions to the field of sociology is that it deals with the lived experience, ' says Harmony Newman, sociology graduate of Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport and current sociology Ph.D. student at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Her research interests are in gender and family, particularly motherhood. ' By exploring patterns of human behavior, we are able to uncover some of what is taken for granted in everyday life,' says Newman."
