Centenary Safe Zone
Goals and Objectives
To Develop Within Our Community:
- A deeper awareness of one’s personal ideas, stereotypes, and assumptions related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression
- An increased comfort level in addressing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) issues such as heterosexism and homophobia with individual students and within the university community
- An increased awareness of on- and off-campus services that support LGBTQ students
- A network of campus staff, faculty, and students supporting LGBTQ students on campus
What Is A Safe Zone Ally?
A Safe Zone Ally is person who is committed to being a part of the network creating solidarity and a safer and more supportive place for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions at Centenary College.
Safe Zone is modeled on a program started by employees at AT&T and is currently in place at corporations including Lotus Development, Disney, and Levi Strauss. There are also Safe Zone programs on college and university campuses all across the country.
Any member of the Centenary community is encouraged to attend our 101 Safe Zone training session. If you would like to become a Safe Zone Ally, we invite you to participate in our 202 Safe Zone training session and sign the pledge to become an official Safe Zone Ally. Allies receive a personalized Safe Zone sign to display in their offices or other visible areas.
