Black and White & In the
Red River Swamps: Two Stories by Friederich Gerstäcker,
Bilingual edition translated and edited by Mark Gruettner and Robert
Bareikis.
German writer Friedrich Gerstäcker (1816-1872) well-known
for The Pirates of the Mississippi, and The Regulators
of Arkansas, wrote numerous novels and stories filled with
rich images of his journeys in the New World. Among these, Black
and White (1847) focuses on the role of slavery in antebellum
Missouri, while In the Red River Swamps (1870) examines
postbellum racial strife in the region known today as the Ark-La-Tex.
Both stories show that social enlightenment and suspenseful entertainment
can blend into meaningful examples of human compassion and courage.
