Voyage aux prairies osages : Louisiane et Missouri, 1839-1840, Victor Tixier. Introduction et notes de Carol Lazzaro-Weis.

A superb ethnographer and friend of the people who served as his host with such remarkable generosity, Victor Tixier recorded and published everything he saw during his stay with the Osage nation before the Civil War. His Voyages aux prairies osages has left us a faithful portrait of this First Nation that he felt so privileged to have met. Even if his account does not always escape the myth of the noble savage, Tixier captures the diversity of the French-American experience at a time of crisis throughout the Louisiana territory. On one hand, he witnessed the disappearance of French Louisiana and he saw first-hand the ever greater precariousness of his compatriots who lived in more northern areas of the former colony. He documented the multiple nations that were struggling to redefine themselves: France, the United States, and the First Nations of the New World. The scholar who prepared this edition of this rare work, Carol Lazarro-Weis, deserves our admiration as well, because her erudition and love of the text shows on every page. We need her edition of the Voyage aux prairies osages to enable us to understand all the peoples who make up the American experience.
