Environmental Justice > Study Ideas

Research where Superfund sites, landfills or chemical plants are located in your city. Then first visit the communities surrounding the areas near these sites and try to come up with a general demographic for the region. After doing so, research to verify your assumptions about the community. What are the implications of the placement of these sites? Why are the sites placed where they are? What would be a better solution?

Imagine that you are in charge of bringing a petroleum chemical plant to your city. Write and argument for and against bringing the plant to your city. Research arguments used in legal environmental justice cases and compare them to your arguments. Afterward, read over your arguments and determine which one is more convincing. Also, try to determine whether or not it would be best for your city to locate the plant anywhere in the city.
