This course in twentieth-century French literature is being offered for students who plan to major or minor in French. The goal of this course is to examine the poetry, prose, and theater of some of the major writers of the period; with this in mind, you should be prepared for a challenge.

Remember, if this course is your senior seminar, you should regard it as the crowning achievement of all you have undertaken at Centenary; I expect for you to consider it your number one priority this semester.

*All classroom discussion will be conducted in French. If you have difficulty asking questions in class, formulate them at home. Be ready with questions when I call on you! I will give you a grade for class participation every day and I expect for you to contribute aggressively. Your questions or comments should reflect the work and thought that you have put into the day's assignment and should show that you have made an effort to read and understand the material.

*In order to understand the literature of a period, it is necessary to understand the social and political events of the times. There will several assignments on twentieth-century history and culture.

* Oral presentations. Each student will give several short presentations on authors we are reading in class.

Your grade in this class will be given as follows:
Oral presentations 15%
Writing assignments 20%
Quizzes 50%
Final Exam 15%

*Special project for students enrolled in this class as a Senior Seminar (FLNG 473):

In addition to the above requirements, each person enrolled in this course as their senior seminar will complete a major project that should stand as the crowning achievement of your studies here at Centenary. For the majority of you this will be the book manuscript you have been working on for several semesters. Before the end of the semester you should be prepared to make a presentation of your work to the rest of the class. In addition, all senior seminarians are expected to undergo an Oral Proficiency Interview in French.
