Geology

Louisiana State Exhibit Museum

The mission of the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum (LSEM) is to research, collect, preserve and present as an educational resource documents, artifacts, objects of art and the like that reflect the social, cultural and natural history and culture of Louisiana, emphasizing the northwest region of Louisiana. Centenary students can serve with this Community Partner in the following ways, including but not limited to:

  • Event planning and assisting in the coordination of new exhibits
  • Archiving and recording the art/exhibits in which the museum owns
  • Conducting research projects under supervision of the Curator
  • Assist the Curator with data entry projects on loans and exhibits
  • Serve as docents/tour guides

The mission of the Renzi Education and Art Center is to provide quality art and scholastic experiences for youth at risk in the Shreveport/Bossier community, as well as a supportive and equipped environment for children and adults who attend to explore, learn and create under the guidance of professional teachers and artists.   • The After School program for children
  • Assisting the staff in various arts and education programs
  • Tutoring in computer, arts, cooking, gardening, music, and dance

  • Provide a high level of interaction with Sci-Port visitors during and in between scientific demonstrations and shows.

Stoner Hill Elementary School is a learning community that provides all students with the academic skills to enable them to become lifelong learners. To advance the common good by focusing on the building blocks of education, income, health and basic needs to create a measurable positive impact and thereby improving life for the citizens of our region. Centenary students can serve at The United Way by:

  • Developing community outreach programs and tactics to reach various demographics in Northwest Louisiana.
  • Assisting the Volunteer Center in cultivating meaningful volunteer opportunities for individuals, families, children, and organized groups.
  • Working on programs to connect to and develop relationships with religious communities in Northwest Louisiana, including but not limited to joint service projects and ongoing service partnerships.
  • Developing and implementing programming related to community impact areas such as childhood obesity and financial literacy.

Health & Exercise Science

A Place That Warms The Heart

A Place That Warms The Heart provides free grief support groups for individuals and families dealing with the death of a loved one. Their mission is to provide these services in a safe place where the participants are allowed and encouraged to share their feelings as they journey through the healing process. Centenary students can serve with this community partner by:

  • Provide assistance in children and/or teen groups
  • Work with Group Facilitator
  • Assist in various aspects of the organization

Group sessions meet twice a year in the Spring & Fall for eight (8) weeks. (Tuesday nights from 6:30pm to 8:30pm).

Community Renewal International

Community Renewal International works to restore the foundation of a safe and caring community by rebuilding the neighborhood system of caring relationships among all the residents of our cities. Centenary students can serve with this Community Partner in the following ways:

  • Assist the directors of the Friendship Houses with activities for children who participate in the After School Program at each of the Friendship Houses (Friendship Houses are located in 5 neighborhoods with 9 locations)
  • Help with major projects at the Community Renewal Strategy
  • Assist with a variety of administrative duties including: generating reports, preparing mail outs, assemble training materials, taking minutes at meetings

The Glen Retirement System

LSU AgCenter Community Garden
Various community garden locations in Shreveport neighborhoods including Allendale, Cedar Grove, Highland, Mooretown, and Stoner Hill.

The overall mission of the LSU Agricultural Center is to enhance the quality of life for people through research and educational programs that develop the best use of natural resources, conserve and protect the environment, enhance development of existing and new agricultural and related enterprises, develop human and community resources, and fulfill the acts of authorization and mandates of state and federal legislative bodies. Centenary students can serve with this Community Partner by:

  • Assisting with the installation and maintenance of community gardens.
  • Assisting with educational programs about gardening and nutrition.
  • Assisting with community building events.

LSU Health Sciences Center

LSU Health Sciences Center is the training ground for those entering the medical profession. There are several departments in the hospital where the service-learning student can serve, however, not all departments are available each semester and some departments limit the number of students who can serve at one time.

LSUHSC requires that Centenary students spread their service-learning experience over 6-8 months to justify the costs of processing each students. Students must also complete the necessary screening process before beginning to serve.

Martin Luther King Health Center

To extend comprehensive primary health care and pharmacy services at no cost to uninsured or under-insured patients with chronic illness who otherwise often forgo routine medial care because of a lack of resources. Centenary students can serve with this organization by helping to:

  • Provide assistance to the limited staff of this health clinic
  • Complete patient contact hours through helping with patient intake
  • Assisting in education programs for clients
  • Instructing on health procedures and medications

The Providence House

Providence House is a residential development center for homeless families with children, providing comprehensive support services for improving the family structure and moving the family into independent living. Centenary students can serve with this organization by:

  • Tutoring school age children
  • Tutoring adults working towards completing a GED
  • Assisting with childcare
  • Participating in other special projects as needed by the organization

Belcher Presbyterian is involved in world-wide and church-wide ministries similar to those of most other denominations. Belcher Presbyterian contributes to worthwhile causes including peacemaking, ministerial education, and poverty relief and are dedicated to actively serving in the community. Centenary students can serve at Belcher Presbyterian by:

  • Assisting with the afternoon reading and tutoring program for Elementary students.
  • Direct and assist the children in the community in games and outdoor activities

Each year, usually during the spring semester, the Byrd High School Drama Program produces a major musical production. The high school uses a full orchestra and sometimes additional vocalists. Centenary student musicians can serve with this Community Partner by:

Karpeles was established as a library that collect original manuscripts and circulates these manuscripts to several exhibits throughout the country. The museum's primary purpose is to allow the public, specifically school children to view written history. Centenary students can serve with this organization by:

Shriner's Hospital

To provide the highest quality care to children with neuromusculoskeletal conditions and certain other special health care needs within a compassionate, family centered and collaborative care environment. Provide for education of physicians and other health care professionals. Conduct research to discover new knowledge that improves the quality of care and quality of life of children and families. Centenary students can serve with this organization in the following ways, including but not limited to:

  • Helping with tutoring older patients
  • Reading to younger patients
  • Drawing, coloring, or playing board games with patients of all ages

Shriner's Hospital requires that Centenary students commit to their Service-Learning experience for a six (6) month period of time to justify the cost of processing each student. All students must complete the necessary screening process before beginning to serve. (The screening process can take a minimum of two weeks).

Turner is a Pre-K through 8th grade school in West Shreveport. The students are interested in learning and being involved in activities at school. The mission of Turner Elementary is to ensure that all students become life long learners and positive contributors to society. Students may serve at Turner Elementary and Middle school by:

  • Assisting in music programs such as band, orchestra, and piano classes.
  • Assisting with elective classes such as physical education, computers, study skills, art, and foods and nutrition.
  • Assisting with core classes such as reading, language, math, science, and social studies.
  • Tutoring children during after-school programs.

To advance the common good by focusing on the building blocks of education, income, health and basic needs to create a measurable positive impact and thereby improving life for the citizens of our region. Centenary students can serve at The United Way by:

  • Developing community outreach programs and tactics to reach various demographics in Northwest Louisiana.
  • Assisting the Volunteer Center in cultivating meaningful volunteer opportunities for individuals, families, children, and organized groups.
  • Working on programs to connect to and develop relationships with religious communities in Northwest Louisiana, including but not limited to joint service projects and ongoing service partnerships.
  • Developing and implementing programming related to community impact areas such as childhood obesity and financial literacy.

Sci-Port Science Center

The mission of the Sci-Port is to provide a fun, educational environment for people of all ages to explore and actively engage in the world of mathematics, science and technology. Sci-Port Science Center serves to spark curiosity about the world around us, provides hands-on tools for using scientific discovery in everyday life and encourages a passion for life-long learning. Centenary students can serve with this organization by:

  • Provide a high level of interaction with Sci-Port visitors during and in between scientific demonstrations and shows.
  • Greet and assist visitors in all ways possible promoting high quality visitor service to promote the center's many offerings.
  • Provide appropriate and timely information pertaining to both current and future events and programs
  • Maintain and promote the safe and appropriate usage of all Sci-Port exhibits
  • Help to keep all gallery areas clean by providing requested assistance to regular Sci-Port staff

Stoner Hill Elementary School

Stoner Hill Elementary School is a learning community that provides all students with the academic skills to enable them to become lifelong learners. Centenary students will have the chance to participate in many opportunities with the students of this campus. Amongst the activities that students can choose from are:

  • Reading with 1st and 2nd graders
  • Editing writing assignments of 4th and 5th graders
  • Assisting with Family Literacy and Math Nights
  • Assisting in the library
