Dr. Philip W. Barker is assistant professor of political science at Centenary College. He received his B.A (in History and Political Science) from Texas A&M University and his M.A. and Ph.D. (in Political Science) from the University of Colorado - Boulder. He has taught at Centenary since 2005, and he specializes in the areas of International Relations, Comparative Politics, and Political Methodology. Specifically, he teaches courses on European Politics, International Law, US Foreign Policy, African Politics, and Latin American Politics, among many others.
Dr. Barker's research focuses on religion and conflict, ethnic politics, and nationalism. His dissertation, entitled "If God Be For Us: Religious Nationalism in Modern Europe", looked the role of conflict and threat in the formation of religiously based national identity in Europe today. He has since examined the role of US Foreign Policy in shaping Islamic identity in the Middle East. Because of this work, he was named the 2006-07 Centenary College Research Professor in Social Science.
Dr. Barker is married to Kelly Barker and is the proud father of Jack.
