Disciplinae illius grammatici in schola Centenariensi utendae
Locus Classicus at Centenary
In the spring of 1999 the Faculty and the Board of Trustees of Centenary College approved the Major and Minor in Latin. While the program prepares students to pursue advanced degrees in Latin language and literature, it also provides a challenging curriculum in the tradition of the liberal arts. By exploring the matrix of ideas and languages that continue to influence Western culture, participants in the program develop skills of analysis, reasoning, and communication that will benefit them in their personal and professional lives.
The program in Latin at Centenary offers a supportive environment characterized by close attention to the academic interests and needs of individual students. Work with faculty in other disciplines, such as Religion, Philosophy, History, Art History, English, and Communications, enhances literary and cultural material in Latin courses. Moreover, faculty and students of Latin at Centenary may participate in Sunoikisis, the ACS Virtual Classics Department. The goals of this initiative include building a technological infrastructure that will support collaborative efforts among the fifteen institutions of the Associated Colleges of the South.
Opportunities for study abroad are available through the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome, of which Centenary College is a member institution, and spring modules to Italy and Greece led by Centenary faculty.
