My last memory of Centenary College is the night after graduation, the night before I left Shreveport for good, when I was did my last shift as a DJ on KSCL. The last song I played was Bette Middler's rendition of of Tom Waits' "Song From The Sea", saying good bye to all the people and places that had been so important to me for the past four years. The next day I headed for Los Angeles and did not return to Shreveport for over twenty years. I was a young, decidedly off-center, queer youth with a rather peculiar taste in music and humor who was given a voice at KSCL. I was the only person who played Marlene Deitrich, the Andrews Sisters, Rough Trade and Orchestra Luna - probably still am! I have always appreciated that opportunity and will always remember it fondly. I hope that the station continues to provide a way for students, even the ones who don't fit in the mainstream, to speak out to the world around them.
