Applications for Media Head Positions

Student mediaConglomerate, Film Society, KSCL radio, Pandora, and Yoncopin — are run by the students, for the students. Applications are sought each spring and students are free to apply for the head positions in these organizations.

Instructions

If you would like to apply for a media head position, here are the steps:

  1. Review the job description and qualifications listed below.
  2. Fill out the online application and upload a resume. Answer the applicant questions listed below. Failure to submit question answers AND the resume could result in a lack of consideration for the position.
  3. Applicants must conduct an interview with the Media Committee. An interview date will be scheduled in the spring semeseter with notification of appointments shortly following.

Media Head Job Descriptions

All media heads serve on the Media Committee, report to the SGA once per rotation, and are responsible for the budgetary issues and expenditures for the medium. These are all important positions requiring hard-working, dedicated students.

Conglomerate Editor

Description

The editor of The Conglomerate is responsible for the weekly publication of the student newspaper, both in print and online.

The editor's primary duty is to supervise the content of the The Conglomerate. All articles, editorials, satires, advertisements, photographs and graphics are subject to approval and editing of the editor. The editor is responsible for and has discretion over the hiring and payment of all staff and contributors, as well as terminating staff as needed.

To create a smooth-running newspaper, the duties of the editor include:

  • being aware of news, events and organizations on campus by establishing liaisons with organization and department heads
  • selecting and coordinating a diverse staff, including business staff (payroll, ad, subscription managers), editorial staff (features, arts and entertainment, sports, general copy), and writers
  • organizing and conducting weekly staff meetings
  • learning basic Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator skills to assist in some of the layout
  • creating and monitoring the newspaper's financial budget
  • creating and adhering to a production schedule
  • communicating with the printing press
  • replacing equipment/software when it does not work properly
  • maintaining The Conglomerate website (www.theccconglomerate.com) by learning College Publisher skills and communicating with the College Media Network
  • consulting with the newspaper's faculty adviser and/or the Media Committee and SGA as needed

Qualifications

The candidate should be a junior or senior in good academic standing. The candidate should have worked (as a writer or editor - not business staff) on a newspaper (preferably The Conglomerate) for a period of at least one year. The editor should have basic computer skills and an awareness of basic journalistic principles and news style.

KSCL General Manager

Description

The General Manger of KSCL is the final authority regarding all matters of broadcasting, personnel, finances, and institutional and public relations. The GM must have knowledge of DJ quality, staff management, basic technical set-up, and persons within or outside Centenary to contact in the event of extraneous problems.

The GM oversees KSCL’s staff members (Program Manager, Music Director, and News Director) and should be familiar with the responsibilities of each position. The GM solicits applications within the KSCL DJ community and selects staff members each academic year. The GM works with the staff to ensure each area of KSCL is operating efficiently and properly.

The GM is responsible for creating a budget each academic year and managing the finances of KSCL. As such, the GM pays staff members’ salaries and allocates funds for all KSCL fees and purchases. In cases where extra funds are needed, the GM presents a request to SGA.

The GM is responsible for having a basic knowledge of KSCL’s broadcasting equipment. The GM fixes minor problems that may occur. In the event of more serious problems, the GM contacts KSCL’s contracted engineer.

The GM conducts weekly staff meetings and oversees monthly DJ meetings. The GM is also responsible for reporting on the status of KSCL to SGA at least once a semester.

Ultimately, the GM is responsible for overseeing the operation of a non-commercial, educational station providing the campus and community with programming unique to the Shreveport area.

Qualifications

Having participated at least one year as a DJ is required. Having held a staff position at KSCL is strongly encouraged. Being of Junior or Senior standing is also encouraged.

Film Society Student Director

Description

The Film Society student director is responsible for developing a schedule of films in consultation with the faculty advisor and other members of the Film Society. This schedule should reflect the Film Society’s initiative to show movies of artistic and intellectual value rather than films widely shown in most theatres, unless these more mainstream films are being highlighted for particular subject matter which they address. The student director will be responsible for organizing a group of people to show films each week and will be responsible for at least 2 showings per week him/herself. Ideally a review of the film as well as a brief introduction given by the Film Society member will be provided at each of these showings. The director will be responsible for advertising these showings around campus. The director must know how to work all equipment necessary and she/he will be responsible for reporting any malfunction to the appropriate person. The director will be responsible for using funds provided by SGA appropriately. The director will be responsible for ensuring that all films are returned to the director and or faculty advisor by the end of the semester.

Qualifications

All applicants for this position must have been a member of Film Society for at least a semester

Pandora Editor-in-Chief

Description

The Pandora editor-in-chief must hire a diverse staff of assistant editors, including but not limited to literary, art, music, on-line, and layout. It is also in the best interest of the editor-in-chief to hire a business manager to assist with monetary matters. The editor-in-chief must also take responsibility for overseeing the publication from its initial conception of a theme to the final printed product. The editor-in-chief must also establish contact with the printer and the recording studio near the beginning of the fall semester. The editor-in-chief must also oversee the assistant editors’ contribution to assure their execution of the position requirements.

In concurrence with the precedent, the editor-in-chief must be dedicated to exploring ways to expand upon the traditional idea of the literary arts magazine, allowing for necessary adaptations the editor sees fit. The editor-in-chief must also supervise the distribution of the publication in a timely manner. The editor-in-chief also has the power to remove any editor that does not complete their appropriated tasks. The editor-in-chief is also in charge of appropriately spending the allocated budget set forth by SGA.

Qualifications

Be a member of Pandora staff or other previous experience in working with literary magazines prior to applying for the position. It is strongly recommended the applicant serves as an assistant editor of Pandora prior to applying for the Editor-in-Chief position.

Yoncopin Editor-in-Chief

Description

The Yoncopin Editor-in-Chief has the task of producing an annual book that represents that particular year at Centenary College. S/he must hire a staff, assign jobs or titles to the staff, and set the budget and deadlines with a representative from our publishing company, Jostens. Therefore, the Editor-in-Chief must also motivate the staff through payment plans, keep to deadlines, and manage a large budget.

The Editor-in-Chief must have experience in all or some of the following areas: design, art, communications, English, and photography. If s/he lacks in one of these areas, it is advised to seek an assistant editor with these qualities.

It is recommended that the Editor-in-Chief meet with a Jostens representative regularly and have weekly meetings at the beginning of the year to train the staff about how to cover events properly by taking pictures and writing feature articles.

Qualifications

The Editor-in-Chief must be of junior standing and have had at least one year of experience on Yoncopin Staff. S/he must also be in good standing academically.
