Room Selection for 2014-2015

Weíve made an improvement based on feedback from students and input from RHA. Those selecting a full suite will have priority. This ensures that folks who want to live together in a full suite get to do so (as opposed to each set of roommates picking independently and hoping that the other room(s) in the suite are still available when their friendsí turn to pick comes.

Youíll get a paper form in your mailbox. Be sure to bring that form to Apartment and Room Selection on Thursday, March 27 at 8:00p (LLCs and full suites) or 8:15p (others) in Kilpatrick. If you canít make it, sign the ďproxyĒ box and write name the person you are assigning as your proxy to pick for you. Your proxy could be a roommate or suitemate for next year, but the person doesnít have to be. Also, be sure to read and sign the back of the form Ė thatís the housing contract.

Areas Current Students Can Select for 2014-2015:

-Rotary Apts.: entire building
-Cline: 1st and 2nd floors
-James: all of Proper
-Hardin: 1st floor
-Sexton: 1st floor

Meal Plans:

Every student living on campus must have a meal plan. If you donít select one here, the 17/week meal plan will be assigned to you. Requests for meal plan exemptions and accommodations should be directed to the Director of Dining Services. The 17 meal plan is the best financial deal, but only if youíll eat more than 15 meals per week in the Caf. The 7 meal plan is the worst financial deal is available only to those with at least 60 credit hours as of the end of the summer (thatís why itís called the ďjunior / seniorĒ meal plan).

General Room Selection Information

date and time: Thursday, March 27, in Kilpatrick at either 8:00 (LLCs and full suites) or 8:15 (incomplete suites)
Each current residential student not on the graduation list is assigned a Selection Number. Numbers are assigned based on a combination of class year, academic achievement, application date, and disciplinary record. If you have a conflict with Selection date and time, you should sign above and send it with a proxy on your behalf.

Selecting as Part of a Full Apartment or Suite is Prioritized

Those who sign up as a full apartment/suite select before those who sign up as a partial apt./suite. A full apt./suite means that all bed spaces are accounted for (eg: in a 4 person apt./suite, that could be 2 sets of roommates, or 1 set of roommates and 1 suitemate in a single, or 2 suitemates each with a single).

What if Iím not part of a Full Apartment or Suite?

After full suites are selected, those selecting full rooms in a partial apt./suite sign up. Then, those who wish to be assigned roommates later sign up. There will be a maximum of 1 partially filled suite per gender per floor. If you want to be assigned a roommate later, you canít pick an empty room unless no other spaces of your gender are available in that building. This may result in you being assigned to a room or a roommate you donít want. If you end up in a double room without a roommate, you will be assigned a roommate or consolidated with someone later. You are encouraged to explore roommate options now.

What if I donít sign up?

Those who neither sign up nor have gained approval to live off campus will be charged for a room and meal plan for the upcoming year.

Suitematesí Numbers are Averaged (Using the Mean)

By taking the average (mean) of the apt.-matesí/suitematesí numbers, it doesnít matter whether there are 2 people (each with a single in a 2 bedroom apt./suite) or 8 people (each with roommates in a 4 bedroom suite). The mean number closest to 1 picks first, and so on.

Going to Live in a Living Learning Community (LLC)?

If youíre an LLC student who will live in a designated LLC area, bring this form (or send a proxy) to Room Selection at 8:00p. All rooms in LLC areas not needed for LLC members will be open to all students. To know which rooms will be open, we need to have the LLC folks select their rooms. Although they are selecting earlier, they can only pick from the very limited minimum area required to meet their needs. This will best allow for LLC students to live in a close community and for all students to have as many options as possible.

What about Rotary Apartments?

For the Rotary Apartments, you are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to select as an ENTIRE APARTMENT because of the shared front room (kitchen/dining /living room). Most of the apartments are two bedrooms with two bathrooms (every bedroom in Rotary has its own bathroom). There are a couple of one bedroom apartments and a couple of efficiency/studio apartments. Students who were found to be in violation of more than one incident (not including Honor Court) might not be eligible to live in Rotary.

Donít Have a Roommate or Apt./Suitemates?

Talk to friends and others you know to try to find other folks who are looking for a roommate and apt.mates/suitemates. Ask around about friends of friends who are looking for others to live with. Come to Apt. & Room Selection at 8:15p to meet anyone else still looking.

Want a Single Room?

Single rooms are available in all buildings. Students assigned to single rooms might have roommates temporarily assigned to their rooms in the fall. We hope to have all temporary students moved out during the first two weeks of the semester, but it is possible that you will have a roommate for up to one semester if we get more students on campus than we anticipate. Students who have temporary roommates placed with them after classes begin will be charged at the double room rate each day until their room becomes a single. If you do not get a single room during the selection process, we anticipate additional single rooms becoming available during the year as occupancy allows. The cost for a single room is 50% more than the same roomís cost as a double.
