Terry Swan, Campbellsville, Ky., a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves, went on active duty in early December. When not actively in the service, he serves as professor of psychology and religion and dean of the chapel at Lindsey Wilson College.

She is also a horse trainer and amateur competitive trail rider and show rider, a freelance writer and a mental health professional. She is married to Russ Pickering, an environmental scientist and fellow outdoors enthusiast. She has a daughter, Laurel, 12, and a son, Logan, 9, as well as five horses, two dogs, one cat and one Beta fish.
