The Faculty

The diverse interests of the faculty include the history of the ancient Olympic games and international education, learning theory, psychology of sport, exercise physiology, exercise prescription and health education. Physical fitness and wellness, especially nutrition, are important areas of interest to all faculty members since they are integral parts of health and exercise science.

About the Major

The major in health and exercise science is designed to provide an in-depth exposure to the scientific basics of human movement with an emphasis oncritical thinking, problem solving and hands-on learning experiences. Theseskills require the study of structural, functional and behavioral phenomenarelated to participation and exercise in sport, clinical and community settings.The educational experiences and training are diverse and include knowledgeand skills related to anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, exercise physiology,motor learning, exercise prescription, sport and exercise psychology, physicalfitness and wellness, nutrition and drug education. The major in healthand physical education offers a K-12 teacher certification for the stateof Louisiana. This program provides the academic course work and the pre-professionalpublic school experience necessary to become an effective teacher.

Career Opportunities

Many graduates go to graduate or professional schools to major in physicaltherapy or occupational therapy or other medical specialties, exercise physiology,sport and exercise psychology, or other areas of exercise science. Afteradvanced study and/or certification, students may seek positions as physical/occupationaltherapists, nurses, physicians, physician's assistants, exercise specialistsor directors of cardiac rehabilitation, adult fitness program directorsin hospitals or corporations, YMCA/YWCA and community settings and as exercisescientists (teaching or research) in higher education, government, or industry.
