Mathematics & Computer Science
Department
The Faculty
Our Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has outstanding men and women who excel in their fields. Their professional interests include mathematical modeling of biological systems, algebraic geometry, connections between mathematics and the visual arts, software engineering, computer graphics, and the integration of technology in the mathematics classroom.
About the Major
People from all walks of life use the analytical and problem-solving skills that come from understanding mathematical concepts. We want our mathematics majors to learn the fundamentals of mathematics—the arrangements, forms, sets, relationships and properties of numbers—as well as to apply these concepts in modern society through the use of technology-based learning. A solid foundation in mathematics is a smart choice for many fields of study. Our introductory-level courses require the use of a graphing calculator, while many upper-level courses use computer algebra systems and other mathematical software.
Computer Science Minor
In addition to offerings a degree in the traditional areas of mathematics, the math department also oversees a minor in computer science.
Career Opportunities
The mathematics curriculum is designed so that students majoring in the field may choose any number of avenues upon graduation. Recent graduates have pursued graduate study in mathematics at Emory, Texas A & M, and Tulane, with past graduates receiving advanced degrees from the University of Texas, Vanderbilt, and the University of Arkansas. Some of our graduates work in financial analysis, the actuarial field, computer programming and systems analysis, petroleum modeling, and education.
