Composition Contest for High School Students

Students presently enrolled in grades 11 and 12 at any High School or Arts Institution in the United States, or home-schooled students of equivalent age are invited to submit a composition for orchestra. The submitted work can be for strings alone, strings with solo instruments listed above or a chamber orchestra piece using strings and any combination of other instruments listed below.

Eligibility

Juniors and seniors in high school or equivalent age.

Requirements

Submitted compositions may be one or more movements, but the total performance time should not exceed 10 minutes. The instrumentation should be selected from the following:

  • 3 Flutes (1 piccolo)
  • 1 Oboe
  • 1 Bb Clarinets
  • 1 Bassoon
  • 2 Horns in F
  • 2 Trumpets in Bb
  • Tuba
  • Piano/Harpsichord
  • Percussion (3 performers)
  • Strings (up to 4 vlns., 2 vlas., 2 cellos)

Award

  • The winner will receive a scholarship to Centenary College of Louisiana as a Theory/Composition major in pursuit of a Bachelor of Music degree. This scholarship is renewable for four years and is guaranteed to be at least one-half tuition. The scholarship is contingent upon the student's fulfillment of all other requirements for admission to Centenary College and the Hurley School of Music.
  • The winning student's composition will be performed in concert April 14, 2008 by members of the Hurley Orchestra in the Anderson Auditorium on the campus of Centenary College.
  • The winning composition student will receive a recorded copy of the live performance, engineered, edited and preserved on CD, by the Hurley School of Music Recording staff.
