SHREVEPORT, LA -- Centenary College's Continuing Education Office will present "Camp Centenary" for middle and high school students this summer, offering one to eight-week programs in art, creative writing, dance/theater, drawing, film-making, web page design and introduction to law.
For middle schoolers, workshops and short courses are:
Summer Fun Art Camps -- Participants have a choice among six week-long sessions that will be held from 9 a.m. to noon each weekday in the Turner Art Center. Instructors will teach art history and techniques and will then guide students through projects that incorporate those techniques. Course fee, $80, covers materials and a daily snack. Sessions are offered June 9-13, June 16-20, June 23-27, July 7-11, July 14-18 and July 21-25. Each session is a stand-alone module.
Creative Writing with a Word Processor -- Students will learn to use Microsoft Word 6.0 during the first week of the session and will explore the craft of writing during the second week, with classes meeting from 9 to 11 a.m. on weekdays. Meeting times are: Session I -- June 9-13 and 16-20, Session II -- June 23-27 and July 7-11, and Session III -- July 14-18 and 21-25. Cost is $100 per session.
Dance/Theater Workshop -- From 9 a.m. - noon on weekdays June 9-27, Stephanie Frankel and associates will teach dance and movement, stage makeup and theater and voice techniques. The program includes a Parent Day and a mini-recital at the end of the workshop. Fee for the three-week course is $145.
For high school students, courses offered include:
Introduction to Law -- An intense week-long camp, June 22-27, the program is designed to provide a broad overview of the nation's legal system and its complex issues to high school juniors and seniors. Cost for residential participants is $395 and includes materials, meals, housing and linens. Cost for commuters is $350, which includes materials and all meals except breakfast. Dance/Theater Workshop -- Stephanie Frankel and associates will teach an intense theater and acting workshop for high school students from July 7-25. Field trips will be included. Classes meet from 9 a.m.- noon on weekdays. Fee: $145.
Drawing Workshop -- The course will offer increased skill in various media and will explore methods of interpretation through studies of major artistic movements and through intensive drawing practice. The course meets from 10 a.m. to noon on Mondays and Wednesdays during the eight weeks from June 9 - July 30. Students must supply their own art supplies. Cost: $150.
Introduction to Film-making -- Topics include the fundamentals of script-writing and film-making. Classes will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. on weekdays June 9-27 in the Turner Art Center. Cost: $150.
Beginner's Web Page Design -- Students will get a basic introduction to web page design using hypertext markup language (HTML). Examination of existing web pages on the Internet will be included, as well as how to get a page on the Internet once it has been constructed. Classes will meet from 10 a.m. to noon on weekdays during the following periods: Session I -- June 9-13, Session II -- June 23-27, and Session III -- July 14-18. Cost: $75.
Intermediate Web Page Design -- Students must demonstrate an ability to create a web page and use HTML language, with the course dealing with web page enhancements, graphics, forms and other effects. Classes will meet from 10 a.m. to noon on weekdays during the following periods: Session I -- June 16-20, Session II -- July 7-11, and Session III -- July 21-25. Cost: $75.
