SHREVEPORT, LA -- The Shreveport Journalism Foundation awarded its two annual scholarships Saturday (Sept. 26) to students from Centenary College and Louisiana Tech University. The scholarships are named in memory of two well-known Shreveport journalists, Orland Dodson and Kerry Garland.
Amy Boltinghouse, a Centenary senior from Doyline, La., received the Kerry Garland Memorial Scholarship. The $1,000 award goes to a college senior majoring in journalism, communications or public relations who has demonstrated outstanding academic ability, writing skill and journalistic potential. Ms. Boltinghouse is a communications major at Centenary, where she is editor of the Yoncopin yearbook, a staff member of the Centenary News Service and president of Chi Omega.
The daughter of Ms. Donna Boltinghouse of Doyline and Mr. Ken Boltinghouse of Keithville, she is a 1995 graduate of Doyline High School.
Nathan Williams, a Tech senior from Shreveport, earned the Orland Dodson Memorial Scholarship, which is also a $1,000 award. It is designated for a college senior from North Louisiana who is majoring in journalism. The recipient must demonstrate outstanding writing ability, academic performance and journalistic potential. Mr. Williams is a contributing editor for The Tech Talk student newspaper, a member of the Union Board and a disc jockey for Tech radio station KLPI.
He is the son of Ms. Mary Williams and is a 1995 graduate of Caddo Parish Magnet High School.
The scholarships were presented by John Lee of News Radio 1130, SJF vice president, during the foundation's annual benefit golf tournament at Querbes Park.
