SHREVEPORT, LA -- The Friends of
Music Concert Series at Centenary College will present the New Friends
Chamber Players as the second concert of this season at 3 p.m. Sunday,
Nov. 3. The concert will be in the newly remodeled Anderson Auditorium
of the Hurley Music Building at Centenary.
The New Friends Chamber Players,
led by cellist Ruth Drummond and hornist Thomas Hundemer, have played annually
on the Friends of Music Concert Series since 1991. New Friends is
made up of regional professional musicians, who play in various combinations
of winds, strings and piano.
New Friends takes its name from the
group's habit of presenting lesser-known works, either of very well-known
composers, or of composers whose works deserve a wider hearing.
The upcoming concert contains a Divertimento
for horn, violin and cello by Joseph Haydn. That work will showcase
the playing of hornist Tom Hundemer. Two works by female British
composers, Llef (A Cry from the Heart) for flute and cello
by Hilary Tann and Trio for flute, oboe and piano by Madeleine Dring
will also be on the program. The finale will be the monumental Brahms
Piano Quartet in G Minor for piano, violin, viola and cello.
In addition to Drummond and
Hundemer, performers on the program are Laura Crawford, violin; Jean Phelan,
viola; Gay Grosz, piano; Sally Horak, flute; and Theresa Zale Bridges,
oboe. All are members of the Shreveport Symphony and are widely known
soloists and teachers in this region.
Ticket prices are $10 for adults
and $5 for students. Patrons may order tickets by calling the Hurley
School of Music at 318-869-5235 or by purchasing them at the door to the
concert. Admission is free to Centenary College faculty, staff and
students with ID.
