Centenary Mourns Loss of Coach Dan Moreman
SHREVEPORT-Centenary College and the athletic department take this moment to mourn the loss of former assistant softball coach Dan Moreman, who passed away Thursday afternoon after battling cancer.
"We are saddened to hear the news about Coach Moreman. He made a tremendous contribution to our athletics program as well as the entire community. We will truly miss him," said Director of Athletics, Dr. Tom Tallach.
Moreman, a loved man and coach, spent two seasons with the Ladies softball program as a volunteer assistant under Mark Montgomery. With the Ladies, Moreman was involved with all aspects of coaching, but most specifically with the strength and conditioning program. Prior to joining Centenary, Moreman was the head coach at Evangel Christian Academy in Shreveport.
"Dan was by far one of the greatest men I have ever known. I knew he would be great for our program, but I didn't realize how great he would be for me, personally. He made me a better coach and an even better person, while also making Centenary a better softball program," said former head softball coach Montgomery.
Respected by his players for his positivity and will to win, Moreman ventured back into a head coaching role as he joined C.E. Byrd High School right down the street from Centenary in Shreveport last season as he worked with former Centenary softball standout Emerald Doria as his assistant.
"Coach Dan from day one has always been my protector and mentor. He was my father away from home. A player couldn't ask for anyone with more love for the game and his players than he had," said Doria.
"Coaching at his wing has been one of my greatest honors. Coach Dan will always be my "I want to be like Mike" figure on and off the field. He passed on knowledge, jokes and precious memories that will be remembered forever."
Moreman touched the lives of many with his smile, charm, and passion for the game of softball. He brought more than 15 years of coaching experience to the already successful program at Centenary, having coached several Ladies during the summer before becoming an assistant at the College.
Centenary College extends its thoughts and prayers to his wife Patti, three children and five grandchildren along with his many friends in this time of sadness. The world lost a very respected individual on July 22, 2010.
Visitation services for Dan Moreman will be held on Friday evening from 5-7 pm at Rose Neath Funeral Home in Bossier City. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday at 11 am at St. Johns.
