College holds Living Learning Community Fair
SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary students learned more about living, learning, and leading today in the SUB when they visited the Living Learning Community Fair. The Fair offered students an opportunity to explore the current communities as well as those whose inaugural run will be in the upcoming fall semester.
"I think there are a lot of benefits in choosing a living learning community," said sophomore Tyler Garner, who is a Le Quartier Français resident. "I feel that being immersed in a language or whatever you would like to know more about is the best way to learn and soak it all in."
The living learning communities are designed to address some of the 21st Century’s greatest challenges and allow students who share interests to live together in a designated residence hall. Students join with a team of faculty, professionals, and community members to identify a problem, understand it, and take steps to overcome it.
As of Fall 2012, Centenary will offer four living learning communities:
Le Quartier Français immerses students in the French language experience without leaving the comfort of their dorm. Students live in James Hall West, where they are surrounded by French television, music, and food: no English allowed.
GreenHouse is open to students who are interested in environmental issues and sustainability. GreenHouse students live and study together through team-taught learning labs, service learning and internship opportunities, and special events.
Node, the new living learning community that focuses on technology, design and media, will launch in Fall 2012. Social technologies connect citizens to information, to other citizens, and to resources. Node will involve Centenary students in the critical production of these technologies with a focus on social change.
Santé also opens in Fall 2012. This health-focused community is centered on improving the care of some of the least advantaged people and improving global health. Santé students are expected to cultivate a strong understanding of the ethics of poverty and health care and a commitment to creating a culture of giving.
The application deadline for 2012-13 membership in the living learning communities is Monday, March 5. Students can submit a statement of interest form through the living learning community page of their choice.
