Connecting to the Internet at Centenary College via RESNET

To be able to connect to the Internet via RESNET you will need:

  • either a PC with Windows 98 (or newer) OR Macintosh with Mac OS 8 (or newer)
  • your operating system CD or diskettes
  • Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC) – typically $20-$50 – including driver disks/CD. We recommend a 10/100 (dual speed) NIC rather than the older 10 Mbps models. If purchasing a new computer, you can likely buy a machine with a NIC card preinstalled.
  • Category 5 Ethernet patch cable – typically $20-$40. These sometimes come with your NIC, but a longer cable may be required according to the placement of your computer and the wall jack in your room. A standard phone cord will not work.

For liability reasons, Centenary IT department can only be responsible for your connection to the network. All hardware and software installation is the responsibility of the computer owner. All computer products should include outside technical support. If you do have a problem related to your connection to the network, please fill out a technology service request form. This can be done from a library computer if you don't have internet access from your room.

Setup Procedure:

  1. Install your network card by following the directions included with the card. This must be done before any assistance can be given by Centenary’s IT Dept.
  2. Connect your patch cable to the Ethernet port in your computer and into the data jack on your wall. This jack will be located on the same box as your phone jack. It should be labeled with a blue/red tag.
  3. Boot your PC and look on the back of your network card to check for a "link" light. If the light on your card doesn’t come on check the cable between your computer and the data jack. If this doesn’t help, fill out a technology service request to get the IT Dept. to check your network drop.
  4. After establishing the physical connection, open your web browser. The only page you should be able to receive is the RESNET registration page. Read the network usage policy, fill in your email username and password, and click accept. If you are unable to view the RESNET registration page, try the troubleshooting tips below.
  5. You should receive a page telling you to reboot your computer. Close your web browser and reboot.
  6. Once you have rebooted try browsing to your favorite website to check your connection.

Troubleshooting

If you have troubles getting to the registration page, please try uninstalling and reinstalling your network card (on Windows machines, this can be done thru Add/Remove Hardware in the Control Panel). If you have been using your card on another network, please make sure that your network card is set up to use DHCP.

If you have trouble registering, make sure you are typing your email password in correctly. If you do not yet have a Centenary email account, you can get one by filling out the email registration form using a computer located in Magale Library.

Any problems can be addressed by filling out a technology service request form.
