Students who are enrolled in and successfully complete their first semester of RELI 200 automatically receive credit for GED 151C - Service-Learning/Church Careers. Cross-register for GED 151-section C when registering for RELI 200. Betsy Eaves supervises this section.

Students will groom, care for, and walk The Glen Dogs to senior citizens residing at The Glen and at times to the children going through therapy and treatment at Shriner's Hospital & LSU HSC Pediatric Hospital.

Chimp Haven

Community Renewal International

Students will assist the directors of the Friendship Houses with activities for children who participate in the program as well as complete many other important tasks that the Community Renewal may do on a weekly basis.

G.R.E.A.T. (Great Results Equine Assisted Therapies, Inc.)

This program assists persons with physical and in some cases mental handicaps. Students serving at this agency deal with many aspects of a working ranch. Care for horses, work with riders as "side-walkers", "leaders", or "back-riders" and/or assist with other chores around the ranch.

Habitat for Humanity

Students will work with a construction supervisor and/or community volunteers on rehabilitating homes for qualified low-income citizens. This service is usually scheduled for Saturdays, all day.

Holiday-in-Dixie (spring semester only)

Students will assist the staff in a variety of areas to bring this 12-day festival to the Shreveport-Bossier area in April.

INDEPENDENT SERVICE-LEARNING PROJECT

(see: Director of Service-Learning)
Independent projects will be considered for Service Learning Credit. To be considered, a project must be part of an established non-profit agency as designated under section 501c3 of the IRS with a Letter of Determination from the US Department of Treasury, a public entity such as an educational institution, or an established and recognized religious organization. The project must be pre-approved by the Centenary Plan Committee and supervised by the Director of Service-Learning. Independent projects include, but are not limited to, performing arts productions, youth sports activities, hospitals and summer camps operated by non-profit agencies. No project directly benefiting Centenary College or the Centenary "family" will be considered.

Jambalaya Jubilee (summer service only)

This camp for children with disabilities takes place on the Centenary College campus. Student placements are limited to 2 or 3 students and includes service relating to pre-camp prep and organization, registration, and assisting the director while the children and their parents are on campus. There is also a need for lifeguards. This opportunity is offered during the summer only - generally in June.

Karpeles

Students will help to facilitate the staff with meeting and greeting the public, preparing materials for various visiting groups such as school children, and act as a docent. Students will need to familiarize themselves with the exhibits that travel to the museum.

L.A.T.A.N. (Louisiana Assisted Technology Access Network)

Students will learn and become familiar with assistive technology (AT) devices for individuals with disabilities. LATAN helps these individuals achieve a higher quality of life and greater independence through increased access to AT as part of their daily lives. Students will also have the opportunities to education others on AT devices, represent LATAN at public health fairs to raise awareness of AT devices within the community, and research to discover the most up-to-date resources available to help individuals with disabilities obtain AT devices.

M.L. King Health Clinic

Students will provide assistance to the limited staff of this helath clinic for medically underserved population in the LedBetter Heights area of town. Students will also have the opportunity to have patient contact hours through helping with patient intake, education programs for clients, instructing on health procedures and medications, learning to take vital signs, patient medical histories, and glucose testing.

Students work along side medical professionals who provide inpatient and outpatient medical care to area veterans. Students will have the chance to assist wheelchair patients, help in admitting, work in specialized treatment areas such as social work, pharmacy, and psychiatry.
