Volunteer Opportunities

The Office of Community works with a number of Non-profit and Volunteer Service Organizations throughout the Shreveport-Bossier area to help promote volunteerism. Below are some of the many current opportunities for community service existing in our community. Sci Port Discovery Center - December Volunteer Events

Sci-Port: LOUISIANA'S Science Center provides a fun, educational environment for people of all ages to explore and actively engage in the world of mathematics, science and technology. Sci-Port serves to spark curiosity about the world around us, provides hands-on tools for using scientific discovery in everyday life, and encourages a passion for life-long learning.

Shreveport's Municipal Auditorium "Stage of Stars" Museum Needs You

The Stage of Stars Museum located inside Shreveport's own Municipal Auditorium is looking for volunteers to assist with activities and research, provide tours, help with designing exhibits, and curatorial duties.

LEAP Test Tutors Needed

The Volunteers of America Lighthouse is requesting student volunteer tutors to help assist 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders 1 on 1 with preparting for the Math Leap Test at 2 of the Lighthouse After School Program Sites.

Volunteers are needed from 3:30pm-4:30pm OR 4:30pm-5:30pm on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons beginning January 13th-March 10th, 2009.

The tutoring sessions will take place at the Lighthouse on Travis Street (802 Travis St.) or Central Elementary School (1627 Weinstock). For more information call (318) 429-7510.

Piano Player Needed

Are you musically talented and play the piano? The Glen (local nursing home) is looking for someone to play for about 1 hour on Thursday afternoons for a small group of elderly ladies living there.

H.E.L.P. Law Offices

H.E.L.P. Law Offices provides legal advice and assistance for homeless and low-income residents of Caddo and Bossier parishes. This service takes place every 2nd Wednesday of each month from 7:30am-8:30am at the Centerpoint Community Services building located at 2121 Fairfield Ave. in Suite 130.

Legal assistance is only given for civil legal issues only, criminal issues are not addressed. Appointments are necessary to see an attorney. To do so call (318) 221-2205 or (318) 227-2100.

This service is co-sponsored by Northwest Louisiana Pro Bono Project and Centerpoint Community Services.

The Meadows Museum of Art - Docent Program

The Meadows Museum of Art at Centenary College of Louisiana is an educational unit of the College charged with the collection, conservation, preservation and interpretation of visual art works of museum quality from the permanent College Collection inclusive of the Indochina Collection of Jean Despujols. The Museum augments its permanent collections by maintaining a rigorous temporary exhibition schedule designed to reflect the diversity and interests of the regional community by presenting the highest level of aesthetic achievements of individuals and cultures.

Mentoring Program with Volunteers of America

Interested in mentoring a child one hour per week, becoming a role model in their life and helping them to succeed?

Family Resource Center

The Family Resource Center is a state-of-the-art computer lab to help adults learn to use basic software programs, write resumes, etc. Workshops on a variety of topics are held. Volunteers are needed to assist students on the computers and to lead workshops.

Families Helping Families's Parent Support Group

Are you a parent or know a parent of a child with a disability? Families Helping Families has a support group for parents of children with all disabilities and abilities from ages 0-9 years old.
