Core Asssement: Initial Implementation and Five-Year Rotating Schedule

Rationale: Centenary has recently moved to an embedded assessment procedure for the evaluation of the College Core. In the Spring semester of 2005 the Faculty of the College approved outcomes and grading rubrics for the Mathematics and Social Science areas of Core. Hopefully, in the Fall of 2005 the Faculty will approve a set of outcomes and grading rubrics for the Humanities and Natural Science areas of Core. Prior to SACS re- accreditation visit the College will need at least one year of data (i.e. two semesters of data) for each area of Core. The College, however, will not have to assess every area of Core every semester once its embedded assessment procedure is in place and working. For that reason it is suggested that areas of Core be assessed on a rotating basis. This proposal suggests a three-semester rotation for the various areas of Core. There are four main areas of Core: inquiry in the social sciences, inquiry in the humanities, inquiry in the natural sciences, and inquiry in mathematics. The areas of social sciences and humanities may be further sub-divided into two areas because in these two areas students are asked to take classes at both the 100/200 level and at the 300 level or above. For the purposes of this proposed rotation, Core is broken down into six areas: Soc. Science 100/200, Soc. Science 300+, Humanities 100/200, Humanities 300+, Math, Natural Science. The initial implementation of Core assessment is shown below along with an ongoing schedule for the following five years. Due to the rotational offering of courses, it is possible that an infrequently offered Core course would fall outside of this assessment schedule. In the event of this occurrence, that class should be assessed at least once every three years.
