CAREER Credit Internships
Internship Program Eligibility & Process
The Internship Program provides students with work experience that complements their classroom preparation. The program is comprised of “academic internships” coordinated by faculty and “non-academic internships” coordinated by Career Services.
Internships coordinated by Faculty or Career Services may meet the Career Exploration GED 251 requirement for graduation. The internship program is a valuable part of the academic experience because it gives students an opportunity to:
- Apply classroom knowledge and skills
- Gain valuable work experience related to the student's academic program
- Identify alternative career opportunities
- Grow professionally
- Make connections with professionals who might provide letters of recommendation or help with job searches.
Eligibility
Undergraduate students are eligible for an internship if they meet the following requirements:
- Are at least sophomores (26 or more hours)
- Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
- Have completed at least one semester at Centenary
Internship Process
Step One: Identify an Internship Opportunity
The Internship Program is a self-directed program, in which eligible students are responsible for identifying the internship opportunities. Students identify potential opportunities and work with Faculty or a Career Services advisor to ensure these internship opportunities meet the Internship Program Guidelines, are appropriate to their knowledge and skills and suitable for their goals.
Many internship opportunities are found on CAREERlink, via faculty, family connections, and on the Career Services Internship webpage.
Step Two: Complete the Internship Proposal Form (Application)
Note: Students complete the Internship Proposal Form and have the internship approved by faculty or a Career Services advisor prior to starting the internship.
1. Determine the number of academic internship credits to be earned and how many hours of internship experience are needed to earn the desired internship credits. One credit of internship generally requires 40 hours of experience; this will vary depending on the Faculty or Career Services advisor coordinating the internship.
Note: Multiply the number of credits desired by 40 hours to determine how many hours of experience are needed. (40 hrs = 1 credit; 10 hrs per week for a 12 week semester = 120 hrs = 3 credit hours)
2. Complete the "Student Information" section of the Internship Proposal Form.
3. Submit the form to the supervisor at the internship site and have the employer complete the "Employer Information" portion of the form. Ascertain that employer is aware of and agrees to the number of hours of internship experience preferred.
4. Students will take the completed form and a copy of their current transcript to their faculty or Career Services advisor. The faculty or Career Services advisor will discuss expectations with the student and complete the "Faculty/Career Services Advisor Approval" section of the form.
Students will be asked to complete a resume, a final paper that describes the internship experience, a student evaluation of the internship, and other projects as assigned.
Step Three: Register for the Internship
1. The student is responsible for returning the Internship Proposal Form to Career Services in Rotary Hall.
2. Once students are approved to register, they will receive an e-mail from Career Services indicating approval to register. This e-mail will include whether GED 251, academic credit or both are approved.
3. Complete the Internship Learning Contract with the assistance of Faculty or Career Services advisor. Student, advisor and employer supervisor signatures are required. Return contract to Career Services.
Step Four: Internship Completion
1. After completing registration for the internship, Career Services will notify employers that the internship has been approved and provide employers with the Employer evaluation forms.
2. After completing the internship, students must submit the required documentation by the due date specified by the Faculty or Career Services advisor.
3. The employer will also submit his/her evaluation.
4. The Faculty or Career Services advisor is responsible for reviewing the submitted documentation and assigning an academic grade or CR/NC for the internship and/or awarding Career Exploration GED 251 credit in the case of a non-academic internship.
