Course Description and Objectives

This first year course will train students in Spanish at the beginning level. Through writing and reading assignments, internet, video activities, and lectures, you will increase your ability to use the language. This class it is also intended to help you to become more aware of the Spanish- speaking world. Class will be conducted almost entirely in Spanish.

Course requirements

Attendance and Paricipation

Attendance is extremely important. You may miss up to five classes during the semester. Three tardies will count as one absence. If you miss between six and nine days, one point will be deducted from your final grade. If you miss more than nine days, two points will be deducted for each absence over nine. Thus, if your final grade were a 91 but you had missed 10 days of class, your grade would drop to an 88. (If you play a sport or have some serious illness that causes you to go over the limit, please see me ASAP).

You may not miss scheduled tests, compositions, presentations, and the final exam. No make-ups will be given for unexcused absences.

All students are expected to participate, so it is important to have read the material and do the exercises before each class.

Assignments and Workbook

You will be assigned as homework specific exercises from the activities manual, as well as textbook-related activities for each chapter. If you cannot do an exercise, at least do the reading and pay close attention in class next day. Then, go back to the exercise after class. If you still cannot do an exercise even after you have been to the class where we covered that material, see me because we will have quizes on these grammar points. Homework will be collected almost every day and some exercises review in class. For your homework will get checks (√ )worth points: √+ = 10 points, √= 7 and √- = 5 points. Additionally, you will be assigned some exercises from the CD-ROM that came with your book. No late homework will be accepted.

Chapter tests, quizzes and final exam

In Spanish 101 we will cover Chapters Preliminary to almost all of Chapter 6. There will be one test per chapter (5) and a comprehensive final exam that will include Chapter 6. We will have 10 small quizzes during the semester. The lowest two grades from the 10 quizzes will be dropped.

Oral Assignments

These presentations are very important for your oral proficiency. You will have two oral presentations. For the first one, you will work with a group or in paired-format, and for the second in individual-format (instructor will inform you in advance). Oral presentations are all in Spanish and you are not allowed to read from your notes.

Compositions

You will write three (3) compositions. They will be taken from the Escritura part of your Activity Manual book. Compositions must be written in Spanish and should be typed, doble-space, font size 12 and have a tittle. No late compositions will be accepted.

  • Composition # 1 Due date: October 13. From Chapter 3, page 66
  • Composition # 2 Due date : November 9th. From Chapter 4, page 89
  • Composition # 3 Due date: Dicember 3rd. From Chapter 5, page 112

Video and Internet on http://tudiras.heinle.com and www.studyspanish.com.

¡Tú dirás! presents a video in a dynamic real-world context. You will enjoy following the lives of five strangers and learned about them in a Spanish-speaking culture. You will be responsible for the information presented in these videos on weekly quizzes and tests.

There will also be internet activities. Every other week, you will go to a computer with access to the internet to get the information and complete the corresponding worksheets. Handing the worksheet will count toward your homework grades and material from the web sites may appear on tests.

Extra Credit

You will have regular opportunities to improve your course grade if necessary. You may gain points on tests by turning in completed pages from ¡Tú dirás! Activities Manual. To earn these points, you should do ALL the exercises that are not assigned as homework including CD-ROM activities for a given chapter and turn them in the day of the chapter test. If you have not completed and corrected all written exercises (except for Escritura) you will not receive credit.

You may also add one half point to your final course grade by viewing and then summarizing and reviewing a Spanish or Latin American film. Appropriate theater pieces or poetry and short stories in translation may be substituted for films if you prefer.

Honor Code

Tests, quizzes, compositions, presentations and extra credit are subject to the terms of the honor code. You may consult classmates and friends on homework assignments but should never copy another’s work or have anyone else write for you. You should also not rely on computer translators. They will give wrong translations and won’t help you to learn.

Course Requirements and Grading:

  • Class Participation and Attendance 10%
  • Tests (5) 30%
  • Compositions (3) 15%
  • Oral assignments (2) 20%
  • Quizzes 5%
  • Workbook / assignments 10%
