Latin American Short Story

This course will expose you to the richness of the Latin American short story and will include study of realist, Gothic, and fantastic modes of representation. The course takes a thematic approach and will focus on how writers use the medium of the short story to construct notions of language, time, and memory. We will also look at the impact of photography, film and other ‘contemporary’ visual media on the short narrative and its themes and, in particular, the theme of the nature of artistic representation itself.

The course is conducted primarily in Spanish, and the readings are in Spanish and at an advanced level. It is a course designed for students who are generally fluent in written and spoken Spanish. See me if you are having trouble.

Policies

Attendance is taken very seriously and is an important component of your participation grade. You should not miss more than 3 days of class. More than that will have a negative impact on your final grade, lowering it by 1 or 2 letter grades. If you must miss a lot of class due to illness or athletics, please discuss your situation with me.

All work is subject to the honor code. Tests, papers and projects should be done independently. You may wish to work on homework/ comprehension questions with others in the class. This is acceptable, but, while you may discuss answers with other students, you should never copy any one else’s written work. The writing and wording should be your own.
