Course Description
Spanish 422 is a panoramic course that studies the principle themes and debates in Latin American culture as presented in a vast array of written and visual texts from the age of exploration through the end of the nineteenth century. Students will read poems, short stories, letters, and chronicles by both Spanish explorers and conquistadors, including Christopher Columbus, as well as poems and histories recorded by the indigenous peoples they encountered before and after the Spanish Conquest. We will also examine literature from the period of Latin America's independence and the civil wars that followed in the nineteenth century. Some of the themes discussed in the course include the representation of war, slavery, and cultural mestizaje.

In addition to mid term exam, you will write 2 short papers. You may rewrite one if you receive a poor grade and wish to improve. The oral presentation may be done individually or with a partner and will consist of your close reading and interpretation of a text we are studying or a closely related one. The final project will require you to creatively integrate the material we have been studying in class. Your participation grade has several components. For most classes I will assign reading comprehension questions that will help guide your understanding of the readings and also help you to discuss them in class. Often, I will also check for comprehension by giving a quick comprehension quiz at the beginning of class. Don't panic if you do not perform superbly on all of them (it will be ok), but do try comprehend what you read. Once may not be enough because some of these texts are quite difficult. In most cases I will just be exposing you to excerpts or sections; this should make things considerably easier, but you will still have to work hard.
