Kendall Hughes

When it was time to select a college to attend after completing high school, Kendall did not have to look very far. Her parents insisted she continue her education and attend college, but they left it up to her where she would go.

"We looked at schools all across the nation, but in the end Centenary was the best choice for me both academically and financially," said Kendall. "Looking back, I couldn't have made a better decision."

Growing up in Shreveport, Kendall knew about Centenary because it was basically right in her backyard. But that is one of the things she enjoys about the College-the closeness of home but a world apart.

"I enjoy that even though I have lived in Shreveport my entire life, when I am on Centenary's campus I feel like I'm in a separate entity," she said. "But I can also choose to experience Shreveport life when I want to."

To Kendall, that is part of the appeal of the small liberal arts college and the Centenary experience. The small community life, she said, is what makes the Centenary experience for her.

"After only a semester on campus, you can recognize every face as you walk to class," Kendall said. "In addition, the close relationship with professors and even their families is amazing. Even as a freshman, I was invited to dinner with other students at their homes. That kind of personal relationship fuels my learning experience, and can't be found anywhere else."

It is that interaction between students and faculty members that Kendall appreciates while studying for her biology degree. While every student has incredible respect for their professors, the lines, she said, that usually exist between student and teacher are sometimes a little blurry at Centenary. "The faculty at Centenary can simply not be compared to anyone else," she said. "They truly care about their students, and want them to learn, not just perform well on a test."

If you ask Kendall what she likes most about Centenary, the answer is easy... she likes that she doesn't have to choose one or two things to focus on. "Here I have the opportunity to study science and religion, debate resolutions in SGA, host prospective students, attend worship service, and hang out with my sorority sisters… all on one square block."
