Virginia-Kate Mather
Junior Virginia-Kate Mather wanted the best of both worlds: the close-knit environment of a small school, but with the quality academics of some of the country’s more well-known universities. She found it at Centenary. "I wanted to go somewhere I could easily get involved, know my professors on a personal level, receive a quality well rounded education, and have a good time making lasting memories," she says of her college search. "Centenary fit every one of my requirements and on my first visit, I knew it was perfect for me – it felt like home already."
Though she is now spending her summer studying in Mons, Belgium, Virginia-Kate knows where her heart is. "I love the Centenary Community – it is welcoming, loving and we are all united together," she exclaims. In fact, it is her high level of involvement at Centenary that has led her all over the world. With the Centenary College Choir, Virginia-Kate has toured England, Ireland, Wales, New Zealand, and Australia, even performing in the Sidney Opera House. And now, it was her dedication to her French studies at the College that earned her the scholarship from the Council for Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL) that sent her to Belgium.
"Centenary forced me to break out of my shell and think outside the box," says Virginia-Kate. "I now have education behind my opinions and am pushed by my professors to challenge myself and not settle for mediocre. I have gained experience, confidence and independence."
But after traveling all over the world, what is it that will pull the intrepid globetrotter back home to Centenary? That’s an easy answer for Virginia-Katie: "my favorite experience: making lifelong friends and memories!"
