The organizations listed below have met all the requirements outlined in the Community Partner Agreement to participate in the Centenary College Service-Learning/Community Program and have been approved as official Service-Learning Community Partners with the college.

American Rose Society

The mission of the American Rose Society is to increase the general interest in the cultivation of the Rose for all people and to improve its standard of excellence. Centenary students can serve with this community partner in the following departments:

  • Editorial- Helping with indexing, filing, scanning slides, and other duties related to publishing our bi-monthly magazine American Rose.
  • Membership- Assisting with membership marketing initiatives.
  • Development- Assisting in processing grant proposals, updating the garden membership database and development of the garden volunteer program.
  • Advertising/Marketing- Assisting in researching the advertising industry and gardening trends in an effort to find new products and potential advertisers. Also assisting with press releases, marketing plans, event planning and media relations.

Belcher Presbyterian Church

We at Belcher Presbyterian believe that worship, education and fellowship all contribute to service. We are involved in world-wide and church-wide ministries similar to those of most other denominations. We contribute to worthwhile causes including peacemaking, ministerial education, and poverty relief, and we are dedicated to actively serving in our community. Centenary students can serve at Belcher Presbyterian by:

  • Assisting with the afternoon reading and tutoring program for Elementary students.
  • Direct and assist the children in the community in games and outdoor activities.
  • Collecting and recording oral histories from older individuals in the area for the Red River Crossroads Historical Association.

Each year, usually during the spring semester, the Byrd High School Drama Program produces a major musical production. The high school uses a full orchestra and sometimes additional vocalists. Centenary student musicians can serve with this Community Partner by:

  • Playing in the orchestra with the high school student musicians
  • Singing with the high school student musicians as they learn their music for their performance

Caddo Animal Services

The Caddo Parish Animal Services provides public safety through the response and prevention of animal related incidents while exercising all opportunities to ensure humane treatment of animals. It is the goal of the shelter to give each animal the love and affection that it may have been denied. Centenary student musicians can serve with this Community Partner by:

  • Washing, grooming, walking, feeding and playing with the dogs and cats.
  • Assist shelter employees as needed.
  • Work on adoption days, lost & found lists and waiting lists for those waiting for certain types of animals.

Caddo Council on Aging

The mission of Caddo Council on Aging (CCOA) is to provide support services to persons are 60 and over which help maintain their independence and quality of life in a home environment and to serve as a focal point on issues affecting the health and welfare of the aging population. All seniors 60+ are eligible with special emphasis on low-income individuals. Centenary students, especially business economics, communications, and sociology majors, may be interested in serving at CCOA by:

  • Completing statistical and demographic overviews of Caddo Parish senior residents and of our clients
  • Assisting with expanding their website and facebook
  • Assisting with expanding email based communications including email blasts and other internet communications
  • Assisting with professional writing such as grants, letters and newsletters

Centerpoint Community Services serves as the center for linking people with resources by promoting excellence in human services. Centenary students can serve with this Community Partner in the following ways, including but not limited to:

  • Receiving practical experience with organizing comprehensive data
  • Resource and update information to clients of the organization
  • Be trained to answer 2-1-1 calls
  • Coordinating baby showers at the Cottages of Hope
  • Merchandising donations at the Hope House
  • Managing inventory donations given to the organization

Chimp Haven

Chimp Haven's mission is to provide humane care for chimpanzees no longer wanted in research, as pets, or entertainment. At Chimp Haven chimpanzees live permanently in spacious, wooded, outdoor habitats as part of a chimp community. Centenary students can work with the Chimp Haven staff in the following ways:

  • Developing community educational programs
  • Creating PR materials
  • Assisting in necessary enrichment activities for the chimpanzees

Participants must present a negative read on a current TB test before beginning their service.

The Community Foundation of Shreveport-Bossier

The mission of the Community Foundation is to promote philanthropy and improve the quality of life in the Shreveport-Bossier communities by serving as a permanent and growing resource of expertise and funds. Among our goals are to encourage donors to provide funds that will benefit the community, to provide wise management and investment of financial resources, and to provide information and assistance to donors and non-profit organizations. Centenary students can serve with this Community Partner in the following ways, including but not limited to:

  • Assisting in grant related activities such as researching using Guide Star and preparing correspondence related to grant applications.
  • Preparing short feature stories on recent grantees for potential publication in The Foundation’s newsletter, annual report, and website.
  • Entering data into spreadsheets and filing fund statements.

LSU Agricultural Center Community Garden
Various community garden locations in Shreveport neighborhoods including Allendale, Cedar Grove, Highland, Mooretown, and Stoner Hill.

The overall mission of the LSU Agricultural Center is to enhance the quality of life for people through research and educational programs that develop the best use of natural resources, conserve and protect the environment, enhance development of existing and new agricultural and related enterprises, develop human and community resources, and fulfill the acts of authorization and mandates of state and federal legislative bodies. Centenary students can serve with this Community Partner by:

  • Assisting with the installation and maintenance of community gardens.
  • Assisting with educational programs about gardening and nutrition.
  • Assisting with community building events.

  • Help with major projects at the Community Renewal Strategy Center

  • Learning about the financial structure and development of a regional organization
  • Helping with the organization's major events and implementing opportunities for organizational growth
  • Assisting in public presentations and learning the importance of building networks of support for organizations with unique business structures

The Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana

The Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana serves as the central resource for fighting hunger in Northwest Louisiana. Centenary students can serve in a variety of areas with the Foodbank including, but not limited to:

  • Helping with the implementation of one of the foodbanks many program such as the After School Feeding Program, Kids Cafe, or BackPack Program
  • Organizing, Marketing, and Coordinating a food drive for the foodbank

The G.R.E.A.T. Program was created to offer physically, mentally, or emotionally challenged people the opportunity to experience the benefits of therapeutic horseback riding as well as an inclusive experience with non-disabled people. Centenary students can serve by:

  • Caring for the horses
  • Working with the riders as side-walkers, leaders, or back-riders
  • Assisting with other chores around the ranch

Habitat for Humaniy is dedicated to eliminating poverty housing and homelessness in Northwest Louisiana. Centenary students can serve with this organization by:

  • Assisting with a construction supervisor and/or community volunteers on rehabilitating homes for qualified low-income citizens
  • Help to coordinate large projects for home builds
  • Assist in the organization of information and data for the Habitat office

HOPE for the Homeless

HOPE exists to address the housing and service needs of the homeless that will effectively transition them from homelessness to permanent and/or permanent supported housing and self-sufficiency. HOPE envisions an integrated system of housing and services for the homeless guided by collaboration, enhanced by technology, and fostered by commitment that will lead homeless individuals and families to maximum self-sufficiency and permanent housing. One of our programs, Hope House, serves as the only day shelter serving the street homeless in our area. Centenary students can serve with this Community Partner in the following ways, including but not limited to:

  • Serving at the intake desk at Hope House.
  • Checking-in clients, help them fill out forms.
  • Assisting clients with the services provided by Hope House.

  • Instructing their programs in various Shreveport and Bossier schools
  • Helping to put together the materials for volunteers to use in the classroom

Karpeles: Manuscript Library & Museum

Karpeles was established as a library that collect original manuscripts and circulates these manuscripts to several exhibits throughout the country. The museum's primary purpose is to allow the public, specifically school children to view written history. Centenary students can serve with this organization by:

  • Preparing materials for various visiting groups
  • Acting as docents
  • Researching manuscripts in the museum for future exhibits

L.A.T.A.N. (Louisiana Assisted Technology Access Network)

L.A.T.A.N. assists individuals with disabilities to achieve a higher quality of life and greater independence through increased access to assistive technology (AT) as part of their daily lives. Centenary students can serve with this organization by:

  • Learning and becoming familiar with assistive technology (AT) devices for individuals with disabilities
  • Educate others on AT devices
  • Represent L.A.T.A.N. at public health fairs to raise awareness of AT within the community
  • Research to discover the most up-to-date resources available to help individuals with disabilities obtain AT devices
  • Work with L.A.T.A.N. staff to follow up with clients' satisfaction of servies provided

Volunteers of America: The Lighthouse Center

The Lighthouse helps the residents of Shreveport's poorest neighborhoods by providing programs that deal with poverty, illiteracy, and poor self-esteem through a wide range of servies that assist students ages 5-18 years of age achieve their optimal level of performance.   • Working one-on-one with students who use the program

  • Helping to interview, test, and assist clients of the organization

Louisiana State Exhibit Museum

The Louisiana State Exhibit Museum opened in 1939 in the days of the New Deal public works program. The circular building is noted for its architecture which combines Neoclassical and Modern design. Architects were Edward F. Neild, D.A. Somdal and Ed F. Neild Jr., all of Shreveport. The museum is a member of the Smithsonian Institution Affiliations Program. Centenary students can serve with this Community Partner in the following ways, including but not limited to:

  • Event planning and assisting in the coordination of new exhibits
  • Archiving and recording the art/exhibits in which the museum owns
  • Learning about the organizational structure and learning (hands on) about the day to day operations of the museum

LSU Health Sciences Center

LSU Health Sciences Center is the training ground for those entering the medical profession. There are several departments in the hospital where the service-learning student can serve, however, not all departments are available each semester and some departments limit the number of students who can serve at one time.

LSUHSC requires that Centenary students spread their service-learning experience over 6-8 months to justify the costs of processing each students. Students must also complete the necessary screening process before beginning to serve.

The March of Dimes

The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. The March of Dimes funds programs of research, community service, advocacy and education. Centenary students can serve with this Community Partner in the following ways, including but not limited to:

  • Event management- learn the skills in a Non Profit work day, the “How to” go out and hold a successful event.
  • Non Profit Management- working side by side with management learning board development and volunteer recruitment.
  • Communications- learn to get results through press releases, TV and radio promotions and speaking opportunities.
  • Business- learn the difference in for profit, non profit, and not for profit. Work with management in the day to day business world.

Martin Luther King Health Clinic

The MLK Health Clinic is a medical outreach center for the medically underserved population in the Led Better Heights area of Shreveport. Centenary students can serve with this organization by helping to:

  • Provide assistance to the limited staff of this helath clinic
  • Complete patient contact hours through helping with patient intake
  • Assisting in education programs for clients
  • Instructing on health procedures and medications
  • Learning to take vital signs, patient medical histories, and glucose testing.

The McDade House provides lodging and supportive services to out-patients and relatives of seriously ill patients in local hospitals. Centenary students can serve with this organization by:

  • Assisting the staff of this Hospital Hospitality House with residents who reside in the house while family members are confined to a hospital
  • Registering guests
  • Facilitating new guest orientation
  • Logging out departing guests
  • Helping with the emotional support of family members

The Meadows Museum of Art at Centenary College is an education unit of the college charged with the collection, conservation, preservations, and interpretation of visual art works of museum quality from the College's collection inclusive of the Indochina Collection of Jean Despujols.   • Acting as student-docents in the museum.
  • Leading tours of the museum for visiting guests and
  • Assisting the Meadows Museum staff with general museum operations

The Philadelphia Center is the only resource center in Northwest Louisiana that meets the essential life sustaining needs of qualified HIV/AIDS clients. Centenary students can serve with this organization by:

  • Assisting the organization's staff in educating the community in issues related to HIV/AIDS prevention, protection, and trainings.
  • Helping to make presentations to community organizations about HIV/AIDS
  • Organizing the food distribution program for agency clients

The Providence House

The Providence House provides shelter, care, soverign purpose, and love to all people who are homeless. Centenary students can serve with this organization by:

  • Tutoring school age children
  • Tutoring adults working towards completing a GED

The Red River Revel is an 8-day Arts Festival held at Festival Plaza in downtown Shreveport. Centenary students may not serve for Service-Learning credit at the Revel during the 8-day arts festival. However, service opportunities for the Revel office offered pre & post festival are available such as:

  • Assisting with pre-production responsibilities
  • Organization of the festival itself
  • Marketing and publicity

The Robinson Film Center

The Robinson Film Center exhibits the best in international, independent, and classic films while serving as a resource for filmmaking and film education. Centenary students can serve with this organization in a variety of ways related to:

Robinson's Rescue works to reduce dog and cat overpopulation and euthanasia in our region. Centenary students can serve with this organization by:

  • Singing in the chorus for various opera productions

Shreveport Youth Lacrosse

The mission of Shreveport Youth Lacrosse is to spread the game of lacrosse and develop young athletes. With help of all of the high school programs and Centenary College lacrosse, we aim to introduce th game to help the competitiveness of Shreveport lacrosse. This opportunity is open to all majors. Centenary students can serve with Shreveport Youth Lacrosse by:

  • Helping to setup, coach, officiate and break down every practice and game.
  • Practices occur Tuesday nights at Jones Rice field and Saturdays at LSUS.

Shriner's Hospital

Shriner's Hospital for children in Shreveport provides comprehensive orthopedic care to children. Centenary students can serve with this organization in the following ways, including but not limited to:

  • Helping with tutoring older patients
  • Reading to younger patients
  • Drawing, coloring, or playing board games with patients of all ages

Shriners Hospital requires that Centenary student spread their Service-Learning experience over 8 months to a year to justify the costs of processing each student. All students must complete the necessary screening process before beginning to serve.

Steeple Community aims to meet the community through implementing education and training; to promote healthy families; mentoring and enrichment for the children as well as to promote economic empowerment through business ventures and housing. Our organization prepares participants in elementary/middle school for post-secondary education, careers and/or vocational training to become responsible, productive adults who, in turn, will give their time and talents back to their communities. Centenary students can serve with this Community Partner in the following ways, including but not limited to:

  • Assisting students who struggle with their lessons and/or show low performance.
  • Assisting staff by providing one-on-one tutoring in classes.

Stoner Hill Elemenary School is a learning community that provides all students with the academic skills to enable them to become lifelong learners. Centenary students will have the chance to participate in many opportunities with the students of this campus. Amongst the activities that students can choose from are:

  • Reading with 1st and 2nd graders
  • Editing writing assignements of 4th and 5th graders
  • Assisting with the planning and coordinating of family reading nights at the school
  • Demonstrating science experiments for the students
  • Helping to coach the school's basketball or football team

Sutton Children's Medical Center

Sutton Children's Medical Center combines the latest in pediatric technology with a kid-friendly atmosphere designed to be fun and comfortable for children of all ages. Centenary students can serve with this organization in a number of ways, including but not limited to:

  • Entertaining children who are recovering from an illness
  • Creating movies and short films for children recovering from surgeries

Sutton Children's requires that Centenary students spread their Serivce-Learning experiences to at least 3-6 months to justify the costs of processing each volunteer. All students must complete the necessary screening process before beginning to serve.

Turner Elementary and Middle Schools

Turner is a Pre-K through 8th grade school in West Shreveport. The students are interested in learning and being involved in activities at school. The mission of Turner Elementary is to ensure that all students become life long learners and positive contributors to society. Students may serve at Turner Elementary and Middle school by:

  • Assisting in music programs such as band, orchestra, and piano classes.
  • Assisting with elective classes such as physical education, computers, study skills, art, and foods and nutirition.
  • Assisting with core classes such as reading, language, math, science, and social studies.
  • Tutoring children during afterschool programs.

Turning Point Services, Inc. is a nonprofit social ministry of God’s Way Ministries. Our goals are to rebuild relationships, to strengthen the people of the Queensborough/Country Club neighborhoods, to redevelop community housing, and to reestablish commerce. Centenary students can serve with this Community Partner in the following ways:

  • Assisting in the youth program “Project CHOICE” targeting low to moderate income youth in summer activities.
  • Attending field trips, participate in tobacco cessation advocacy, play games, provide computer training, and tutor reading/math literacy.
  • Driving transportation van.

The United Way of Northwest Louisiana

The United Way of Northwest Louisiana exists to maximize its donors’ investments by clarifying the health and human service needs of Northwest Louisiana and providing solutions to those needs. Centenary students can serve at The United Way by:

  • Developing community outreach programs and tactics to reach various demographics in Northwest Louisiana.
  • Assisting the Volunteer Center in cultivating meaningful volunteer opportunities for individuals, families, children, and organized groups.
  • Working on programs to connect to and develop relationships with religious communities in Northwest Louisiana, including but not limited to joint service projects and ongoing service partnerships.
  • Developing and implementing programming related to community impact areas such as childhood obesity and financial literacy.
  • Grassroots marketing to engage citizens and encourage them to become volunteers.

Volunteers for Youth Justice

Volunteers for Youth Justice aims to train and support volunteers as they intervene in the lives of children and youth who are involved in the juvenile court system. We have nine primary programs, including but not limited to the Jumpstart Program, Teen Court, and the GEMS & GENTS Mentoring Programs. Centenary students can serve with the following programs:

Jumpstart utilizes volunteers to provide educational intervention and support to young people who are referred by area courts for non-violent offenses.

  • Serve as positive role model and offer guidance for making positive life decisions.
  • Assist with program record keeping.
  • Lead small discussion group.

Teen Court is a diversion program that allows first offender misdemeanor youth the opportunity to be judged by their peers in a courtroom setting.

  • Act as a courtroom volunteer, supervise jury deliberation, or supervise community service and workshop sign-up.

GEMS & GENTS are mentoring programs that serve youth referred through the Juvenile Court system.

  • Serve as a role model, participate and lead group discussions, participate in group activities, assist with event planning, assist with the intake of new enrollees, and complete data entry.

VA Medical Center

The VA Medical Center provides in-patient and out-patient medical care for area veterans. Centenary students can serve along side medical professionals who provide inpatient and outpatient medical care to area veterans. Students will have the chance to:

  • Assist wheelchair patients
  • Help in admitting patients into the facility
  • Work in specialized treatment areas such as social work, pharmacy, and psychiatry

Centenary students can serve with this organization in a variety of ways including but not limited to:

  • Youth programs

  • Assisting with the Afterschool program
