The Altruists is a hyperrealist satire written by Nicky Silver in 2001. The play follows a group of young radicals and the hell they love to raise. However, things get a little messy when Sydney, a deranged and narcissistic soap-opera actress, murders her sleeping lover. Frantic, she runs to her brother Ronald, the center of the “radical” scene. However, he is busy being infatuated with Lance, a hustler who is terribly beautiful but terribly stupid. Soon Ronald finds himself at a fork in the road, torn between Lance, his sister, and his friends. The Altruists exposes the hypocrisies in the modern world of activism and the consequences of taking privilege for granted.
