Learning in a new environment can present unforeseen challenges. Here are some tips to help you succeed.
Tip 1: Get up and get dressed
In order to be successful, you must think and act successful. Despite working from your dorm or from home, make a habit to get up and get dressed as if you were headed to class. Get ready for the day.
Tip 2: Manage your time
Having the freedom to complete your coursework on your own time can be incredibly rewarding. It can also be challenging to manage your time and exercise self-discipline. The solution: schedule your day like you would a workday. Set aside blocks of time that are devoted to coursework and productivity. When you succeed, it is easier to relax and enjoy your time off.
Tip 3: Communication is key
When working remotely, it can be easy to remain silent when involved on online chats and other work. If you’re normally silent in class, use this experience as an opportunity to stand out and create a new relationship with your professors. It signals your commitment to learning.
Tip 4: Utilize campus resources
Just because you’re not on campus, don’t hesitate to make use of campus resources. If you need help with a writing a paper, contact a Writing tutor. If math is causing you grief, get help from Math tutor or your professor. There are subject area tutors available in Accounting and Finance, Biology, Chemistry, Foreign Language, Math, Physics, Psychology, Statistics, and Writing. They are willing to work with you no matter where you are. Remaining connected to campus – even virtually – will help you to stay engaged with your classes.
Tip 5: Be patient
We are all in uncharted territory. Your professors are learning how to deliver quality content remotely, and you are learning how to work solely in an online environment. In this setting, everyone has a learning curve to face. As we all figure this out together, exercise patience and be willing to offer constructive feedback about what works and what doesn’t. Together, we will get through the coming weeks having developed a whole new set of educational skills.
