Individualized Major

Sometimes the existing options don’t meet a student’s needs. The Individualized Major gives you the option to design your own major. Drawing on courses from at least two departments, these majors can integrate work and cultural experiences to prepare students to thrive. Students considering an Individualized Major should check the requirements in our academic policies, and then meet with their advisor or Dr. Chris Ciocchetti, the program director for the Individualized Major, to explore their options. When you are ready, just fill out this declaration form.

Individualized Major FAQs

The form requires that I explain how these courses are integrated. What does that mean?

Explain how the courses are related to each other to form a coherent area of study. An individualized major should not be a collection of random courses.

What does it mean to say that this major could not be satisfied by a combination of other majors and minors?

a.        Individualized majors are for truly unique areas of study. If a student could meet the same goals by double-majoring or adding a minor to their existing major, then they should. For example, someone who wanted an individualized major with courses in sociology and psychology should explain why a double major in sociology and psychology, or a major in one and a minor in the other, will not meet their needs.

I am an advisor. Where can I find the Integrative Learning Value Rubric?

You can find it on the AAC&U site or Contact Chris Ciocchetti.
