Why Barbados?

Barbados isn’t just crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches, and spicy food (though you’ll get plenty of that too). It’s a vibrant island where history, music, language, and culture mix to create something unique.

This course uses the island as a living text to explore post-colonial identity and the transition from Britain’s first slave society to the world’s newest republic.

Barbados has stories to tell—and you’ll be right in the middle of them.

Oh, and fun fact: it’s also the birthplace of Rihanna.

What You’ll Experience

  • Explore historic Bridgetown and UNESCO heritage sites.
  • Engage in cultural exchange by visiting local schools and participating in community service.
  • Dive into Bajan culture through food, festivals, and music.
  • Go snorkeling at shipwreck sites in Carlisle Bay.
  • Wander through lush botanical gardens and spot green monkeys.
  • Tour historic sites like a 350-year-old plantation house and a local rum distillery to examine the island’s colonial and economic past.
  • Take part in community sports and intercultural exchanges.
  • Reflect, write, and grow through your own personal project.

This isn’t just a trip—it’s an intercultural adventure that will challenge the way you see the world (and yourself).

"My experience traveling to Barbados is one that I will carry with me for years to come. Being able to be enveloped by Bajan culture and community gave me a new perspective on not only how I travel but how I live my life. I would recommend the experience to anyone."

Julianna Malloy '26

"I am so thankful I took this module. I never could have imagined the value and cultural perspective I gained on this trip. Because of this module, I am a better-rounded person, student, and better prepared for the real world. It also didn't hurt that the food was amazing and cheap, and that the people were kind."

Payne Mills '26

"The Barbados module truly made me a better student and person. The trip allowed me to gain so much value in meting new people, creating new experiences, and to critically think about how culture is shaped by the people's past and present. Barbados had a ton of great learning opportunities but was also extremely enjoyable and gave me the opportunity to build lasting memories and connections that I'll carry with me past my time at Centenary."

Siniya L Edwards '26

"Going to on the Barbados Module was a transformative experience for me. I felt enthralled with the beauty and pride of the island; learning the history of the island added important context to the people and customs and I enjoyed every second of it."
