Academic Citizenship

Academic citizenship refers to the many opportunities and responsibilities that come with belonging to an academic community, including our obligations to act with integrity in matters related to research, teaching, service, and any activity during which we are representing Centenary College. In exchange for responsible academic citizenship, we enjoy a rich and inclusive community where all members can thrive and grow. Core values of academic citizenship, adapted from the International Center for Academic Integrity (see citation below), include:

Honesty

  • Appropriately cite the work of others
  • Represent yourself, your actions, and your research accurately

Trust

  • Work toward mutual understanding
  • Support your claims and arguments with reliable evidence
  • Demonstrate care and sincerity in words and actions
  • Demonstrate self-direction and reliability

Fairness

  • Recognize the impact of your actions on others
  • Be open to perspectives different from your own
  • When collaborating, distribute the work evenly

Respect

  • Convey openness to guidance from your supervisor/mentors/colleagues
  • Acknowledge the work and ideas of others

Responsibility

  • Be accountable for your own actions
  • Engage others in difficult conversations, even when silence might be easier
  • Know and follow institutional policies

Courage

  • Endure discomfort to stand up for integrity even when others might not
  • Take a stand to address wrongdoing and support others to do the same
  • Hold others accountable to the same high standards of integrity

 

Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) are inextricably linked to academic citizenship and vitally important, so we must add to our core values the importance of supporting safe, brave, and dignified spaces where all members of the Centenary community feel empowered to be fully present and speak as their authentic selves without fear of exclusion or harm.
