The Sklar family has a strong connection to Centenary College though they are not alumni

The Sklar family has a strong connection to Centenary College though they are not alumni. Mr. Albert Sklar and Mrs. Miriam Sklar served on the Centenary College Board of Trustees with Mrs. Sklar earning lifetime status in 2008. Mr. and Mrs. Sklar were also instrumental in helping to secure the Despujols Collection for the Meadows Museum of Art. In 2007, Mrs. Sklar established the Albert Sklar Eminent Scholars Chair in Chemistry in honor of her late husband to support Centenary’s chemistry faculty.

The Sklar’s son, Howard, continues his parents’ passion for philanthropy at Centenary College. According to Mr. Sklar, “It’s important for alumni and the community to support Centenary because it is the only private college in Northern Louisiana, which is crucial in the economic development of the area.” Mr. Sklar has established the “Howard Sklar First-Generation Endowed Scholarship” and the “Sklar Family Foundation Annual Centenary Award.” In addition, the family company, Sklar Exploration, made a significant contribution toward the “Miriam Sklar First-Generation Endowed Scholarship.”

Howard Sklar embraces scholarship support as a way to help ensure all students can afford the “high level of education” that Centenary offers. He adds, “If I had an opportunity, I would tell current students how valuable it is to earn an education from a close-knit community of students and teachers working together to provide the best education possible.” As a matter of fact, Howard Sklar contributed to this close-knit community for a number of years as an adjunct instructor in geology.

Centenary and its students are forever grateful for the generosity of the Sklar Family.
