Centenary awards diplomas during 2016 commencement
SHREVEPORT, LA — Centenary College welcomed 154 new members into its alumni ranks on Saturday, April 30 following commencement exercises at the Gold Dome.
The College awarded 73 bachelor of arts degrees, 47 bachelor of science degrees, and 38 master's degrees in education or business. Four undergraduate students earned two degrees. Thirteen students graduated summa cum laude, having earned grade point averages of 3.9 or higher. Fifteen students earned the magna cum laude designation, with a 3.7 to 3.89 GPA, and 18 achieved cum laude, with a 3.5 to 3.69 GPA.
Centenary also awarded three honorary degrees during the 2016 commencement ceremony. Rev. Dr. Charles B. Simmons, the commencement speaker, received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree. Simmons is a 1971 graduate of Centenary and also holds a Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry from Emory University. He is a member of the Centenary Board of Trustees and will retire as Senior Minister of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church in Houston in May. Rev. Brady L. Blade, Sr., pastor of Shreveport's Zion Baptist Church, and Pam Atchison, Executive Director of the Shreveport Regional Arts Council, both received honorary Doctor of Arts degrees.
